Called them up and asked them and the tech on the phone said there was no way it was going to happen and it wasn't possible through a firmware update to be done right. He said the player would need to be redone to even think about 3D with it. I for one was surprised I thought there would atleast be an attempt from them but he seemed very adamant. So I guess no firmware update like I thought for my OPPO. Who knows maybe he's just answering that way to not give false hope.

Quote from review mentioning 3-D. "To make sure we bleed at the edge, up to the minute, I asked Oppo as we went to press whether the BDP-83 or BDP-83SE will be firmware upgradeable to 3D Blu-ray. At press time, the answer was no. We don’t anticipate a yes answer to this question, but I suppose we’ll keep asking for a while. Just in case." They've said the same to others. It actually makes sense - to do 3D the way the BD3D spec is written, you need to be able to generate two separate 1080p video signals at once. Neither the SoC nor the HDMI transceiver chip were designed to do that. The PS3 is apparently working around that by producing two 1080i signals (thus avoiding an overload for the HDMI chip) and relying on the game console's huge processor overkill (at least for a disc player) to pick up the extra processing workload.

It's a very "simple" player internally... That's part of what makes it great because it does what it needs to do well.
The PS3 can be updated for 3D but ... the PS3 is more like a computer than a stand alone player. I doubt I'll get into 3D since I don't think my projector (which is great otherwise) is capable. Still nice to have a PS3 though... funny, when I bought it back in Nov 06 it was the cheapest Blu Ray player available and in my view it's still the very best. -Brian |
