I did it. I took a stand on Netflix. I have had Apocolypto on my want list since before the movie came out, and have still yet to receive it. Almost 80 days I have waited for this movie to be shipped to me, and continually they dig into my DVD queue (I'm catching up on Scrubs) and ship me a DVD. I have had 16 rentals since Apocolypto was released, and of those, half had been DVDs, even though I have at least 3 available Blu-ray movies in my queue before them at all time.

So I did it. I took a stand. I deleted the DVDs out of my queue (Season 5 of Scrubs will have to wait). They are going to have to send me a Blu-ray movie now. Sure, I missed being shipped a new disc yesterday, and will probably be passed over again today, but when they see my account waiting for multiple days for them to send me a movie, they are going to take notice. They are going to realize they need more Blu-ray movies, especially one that came out over two months ago.

I started Netflix for Blu-ray movies, and by golly, I'm going to get them!

Let us know how that turns out.

It would be interesting to know the rental stats of the two formats. I expect the PS/3 is causing it to be heavily skewed toward BD.

Question: How reliable are DVDs from Netflix?

I haven't tried it myself, but it might be useful to create 2 queues so that you can keep track of which DVDs you want later. I've heard that they have the multiple queue thing so that different family members can share an account, but could also make it easier to keep track of what you want and just put the lower priority stuff in the queue that the movie you are returning isn't from.

I sent them an email last week alerting them to the problem, and now I'm taking action. I know that the PS3 spike is killing the wait times, but they need to adjust to the demand.

DVDs are very inconsistent. All are scratched, and about half have minor to major playback issues. I can't imagine how bad HD DVDs look. I've only had a problem with one Blu-ray, but it appeared as if a car drove over it, so I guess that's beyond normal "wear"

That's interesting that Netflix is having the same problems as BB now. I cancelled my BB account for the same reason a while back because I deleted all dvds and went a week without anything shipping. After being on Netflix, they started delaying my titles so I went back to BB and haven't had too bad a luck lately. Since one of the stores nearby carries BR now, I usually don't go long without a BR.

I just received a message about viewing content online on Netflix. Anyone receive this? I wonder if they are targeting me because I'm still waiting for titles?

Josh: I agree with Gary. Please let us know how your "stand" against Netflix stands out... I've been waiting for Black Snake Moan seemingly forever!

If you'd like to borrow my copy of Apocalypto, please let me know - I'm willing to mail it out. Will have to be a "borrow" though - because I really, really like the movie, the PQ, the AQ...

Gary:
I've been with Netflix for about a year and a half and have had trouble only with 4 disks - 2 DVDs and 2 BDs. The BDs were Happily Never After (did not seem to be replicated properly because I received that disk on release day) and Finding Neverland (the disk had a 5-8 mm crack on the edge). Netflix promptly sent out new disks when I reported the problem. I've been able to get upwards of 40 BD movies from them to date.

Well, Day 2 has ended and my stand will go on for at least another day. It now says my next disc will not be shipped out until Thursday. Allow me to add some drama:

Day 1: Realization

Today is the day. Today, I will take a stand against the oppressors. Today, I will fight for what I know is right. Today, I will prevail. No longer must I suffer through the substandard resolution of DVD while others fight over what can only be regarded as table scraps of HD content. I will hold my ground firmly, and not give in to the machine which ignores my desires for HD content in order to fulfill a calculated timeline.

While it pained me to do so, I had to expunge myself of all my queued up DVDs. My appointment with Dr. Dorian will have to wait until I can quench my HD thirst. Ninety days have I waited for this movie, and I will wait no longer. I will not be satisfied with a DVD delivered the next day when it is Blu-ray that I desire.

The machine tells me that I will receive my next disc tomorrow, I doubt it so. Sure enough, a few hours later I receive the dreaded message that my next disc will not ship until tomorrow. What little hope I have left allows me to sleep through the night. Tomorrow will be another day, but is it a day that I can survive?

Day 2 - Perspiration

This morning, the machine told me disc would be shipped today. I had little faith; but I waited. The machine tried a diversionary tactic - it let me know that I was free to watch low resolution movies online for free. I of course knew this, and didn't take the bait - focusing on the objective at hand; to get a Blu-ray movie.

I will not be distracted. I will not forget the pain I am going through as I realize my monthly fee is going to waste with every day my queue sits unfulfilled. This is my goal, this is my desire, this is my need. Survival is the most important thing right now, and no streaming video can distract me from the realization that I am dying inside.

Another disappointment as I receive the message that my next movie will be shipped out Thursday. I begin to sweat. Could this really be happening to me? Could I really allow the machine to pass me over day after day in order to strip me of my $9? Should I just accept a DVD and feel the joys of watching new content again? No. I must continue on my journey. I must continue, for if I fail, I will no longer be myself, but the residue of a man.

I realize now that I no longer fight for just myself, but for others who suffer the same injustices. The weight is hard to bear, but it is my destiny. I may sweat today, but I will not break and I will not bend.

I don't think I've ever had to wait. Why not add some other blu-ray titles that may not have much of a wait?

Yep, about what I expected. Soon all the rental companies will be forced to choose Blu-ray for the simple economics of the disc durability.

And, if they clue in and consider what it would mean if they encourage a transition from DVD to Blu-ray ...

It depends on where you live to I think. My local Netflix is in Hart Ct, I never have a problem with BD's unless it is a brand new title. Once they had to get me a BD from Salt Lake City, and it took 2 extra days. But if I send a disc to them, they get it next day and ship me one out the same day, so it's usually a 2 day turn around. Disturbia is the only 1 of 30 discs on my que that is on wait.

lol Josh that's too funny.

Btw, I used a similar argument on my wife when she complained that I was in too much of a rush to send movies back. I reminded her that with a fixed monthly cost, the more movies I watch, the less I pay per movie. So waiting for her to find time to watch them costs me money

LOL, we need you to do a daily journal.
I did the same thing this week for the same reason - there is currently a hole in my queue because of me deleting all SD stuff out of it, but it says they expect my next movie to ship by tomorrow. I suppose it's possible they are throttling me already, but its only been a month and a half since I first joined, and I haven't been watching and sending back out the wazoo or anything.

Unrelated Netflix rant: Where is Resident Evil: Apocalypse on Blu, and where is The Big Lebowski on HD??
