Default Profile 1.1?

What is this profile 1.1 mandate? It doesnt make my PS3 obsolete in 2 or whatever months does it? Sorry if this is a stupid question but, I have not done any kind of research on this. I have just seen it brought up in a few threads.

Well, so many people are out there spreading misinformation, or simply clueless ramblings it's no wonder you're confused.

Profile 1.1 is the hardware/software specs that add a requirement for handling a secondary video stream, and the software for managing that and exploiting it (e.g. PiP). Many standalones use hardware decoder, and most lack the second decoder channel required.

But, the PS/3 uses a software decoder (like a PC). And it has been designed with excessive power for the gaming applications. It's said the PS/3 BD video requirements spec was that it be able to handle TWO 40Mbps AVC decodes (two full bit-rate decodes of the toughest codec).

There is no reason not to expect Sony to provide a firmware update to activate Profile 1.1 features when everything is settled. I'd expect the studio people already have beta versions.

To add to what has been said, BDA has stated that 1.1 profile disk will be backward compatible to 1.0 players. Now you won't get 1.1 features like PiP but there is content out there now that supports PiP now and works just fine on my player. Oddly, Wikipedia has a pretty accurate explanation of specs including 1.0 and 1.1.

I have always thought PIP was a frivolous feature. Have never used it and never will. no biggie to me.

And, the player probably either does, or could, play the secondary instead of the primary. No PiP, but the content is still accessible.
