Um... no they don't...

There is no obligation to provide 2D versions on 3D and whilst the format does allow for 3D to be downmixed to 2D this does not always occur. The downmix from 3D is not the same as a standard 2D release.

Disney have released a number of discs that are 3D only and will not play on a 2D player at all.

^ Really? The Blu-ray Disc Association's specs for 3D mandate backwards compatibility, at least to my knowledge.

EDIT: According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
On Dec. 17, 2009 the BDA officially announced 3D specs for Blu-ray Disc, allowing backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray players.[160] The BDA has said, "The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the "Stereo High" profile defined by Multiview Video Coding (MVC), an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players."[161] This means the MVC (3D) stream is backward compatible with H.264/AVC (2D) stream, allowing older 2D devices and software to decode stereoscopic video streams, ignoring additional information for the second view.

If Disney truly has released 3D titles without backwards compatibility they are not following the format's specs and that's a big worry.

You highlighted the wrong words in that article:

It is not mandatory at all... never has been... of course it is in their best interests if it is though.

From Disney's FAQ about 3D:
Quote:

Q. Can I choose to watch my 3D movie in 2D?

A. It will depend on the movie you have purchased. There are 2 types of Blu-ray 3D available:

Blu-ray 3D + 2D Blu-ray on one disc (3D/2D compatible)
Blu-ray 3D-only on one disc (3D-only)

When you're watching a 3D/2D compatible disc in 2D, you are actually watching a single eye view of your film (i.e. the left eye or right eye only). 3D/2D compatible discs will be able to play-back in 2D on Blu-ray 2D-only players as well as Blu-ray 3D players. In many cases, the single eye view will be almost identical to the 2D version of your Blu-ray film. In cases where the single eye version of the film is noticeably different, movie studios may choose to keep the 3D version of the film on a 3D-only Blu-ray Disc (playable only in Blu-ray 3D players), and the 2D version of the film on a 2D-only disc (playable in 2D and 3D Blu-ray players). Check your Blu-ray movie packaging for the viewing options available to you.
I would also re-iterate that if a 3D movie has 2D backward compatibility enabled, the 2D version is not the same version as a 2D master of the film.

Have Disney released a 3D movie without a packed in 2D version, though?

look out though there is a new release of the green hornet that only has the 3D version. And amazon.co.UK are doing a 3 pack of preist, the green hornet and resident evil 4 all in 3D but I think its only 3D discs

What nickmate said. Even Exclusive 3d titles can be played in any 2d player. It just cuts out one of the fields and they do not have a 2d/3d option on start up like most discs. Dont be fooled by The Green Hornet, its just been repackaged and now missing the 2nd disc with most of the special features. So if this becomes a trend on release dates, you may be forced to buy the 2d disc edition for the special features if you want them.

To actually answer your question, Sony will be releasing Priest in both 2D and 3D flavours, although based on their past record I would suggest the 3D version will also contain a 2D version of the film. It is out on December 23rd.

Got this as a region free import. Nowhere near as bad as reviews have said. After Alice in Wonderland this is the best a 3d conversion has looked.

Decent movie too, if you go in knowing it's not Oscar winning...
