Arrow MARMADUKE Review Thread

Quote:
The forthcoming comic-strip-to-film adaptation Marmaduke has been on our radar for awhile, but with the exception of some publicity stills, casting information, and a teaser trailer a couple months back, we haven’t really known what to expect from the film. Oh, who am I kidding: it’s friggin’ Marmaduke. It looks exactly like you’d expect it to look. For the trailer (and more commentary on the film), click the img above.

Is it just me, or does Marmaduke look like a carbon-copy of Beverly Hills Chihuahua? They’ve even got George Lopez in there! And Owen Wilson– who’s voicing the titular dog and starred in this generation’s Old Yeller, Marley and Me– may be trying to pull off the hat-trick of having two back-to-back blockbusters that both feature extensive dog-related comedy. Clearly, they’re marketing this thing towards kids, so I suppose we should cut it some slack…but, come on, is there a single moment in this trailer that you didn’t predict the moment you heard there was going to be a Marmaduke movie?

This is just the latest comic-strip-to-film adaptation that Hollywood’s got coming, with Popeye (in 3D, no less) and The Smurfs following close behind it. Apparently, now that everything’s been remade at least once, we’re going to have a new genre foisted upon us: Comic Strip Movies. While there are worse things one can commit to film, I swear to God that someone will pay if a Family Circus movie ever hits theaters.

Although the fact that the strip is owned by Garfield's owner suggests a few movie motivations...

Also worth noting is that Marmaduke didn't talk in the strips. At ALL. He was a real dog, and just clumsily joined in on whatever his masters were doing. (He didn't even dog-talk, like Scooby-Doo.)
Just where the heck the idea of giving him a voiceover came in also suggests someone's got their movie franchises confused.
(And with Owen Wilson, we have a good idea which franchise with.)

Garfield: The Movie looks like oscar-material in comparison to this.

[Show spoiler]The dancing CGI dogs scare me a little.

Saw the trailer for this, I doubt I'll like it too much, should be a hit with kids under 10 though.

Not entirely horrible. Good for children. There's plenty of physical humor and fart jokes. And the voice-over work is good, despite the pretty awful concept and script.

Ugh. I know what you mean. Just during the trailer on TV when they all start dancing and that GOD-AWFUL "Kesha" or "Ke$ha" song comes on, I HAVE to change the channel.

Now now I quite enjoy the live action Garfield films and wish Fox would give them the blu-ray treatment.

I was watching some commercials for it and one thing I though of. it was that they assasinate Wes Anderson, reunite the Wilson Brothers (Owen and Luke) and made Owen look like a dog, or made him give the woice for it.

All right, Marmaduke starts tomorrow at the dollar theater in town. I'm tempted to see how bad it is. Does anyone think it's worth it to spend one dollar to see it?
