Cool! Hey for some of us who might eventually have this issue crop up, could you add a bit more detail on your circumstances and process? I'd like to know how Sony came about getting you a free optical block replacement instead of a crappy trade-in allowance on a newer LCD.

Exactly which model SXRD do you have, and when was it purchased?

Thanks again, your experience is really encouraging compared to some of the grief I've heard from others.

You should check out this facebook page regarding defective Sony optical blocks. Sony has been offering many users a steep discount on a replacement TV because the replacement OBs are only a temp fix.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Have...5766612?ref=ts

There are several other forums out onthe internet that have long discussions on this specific problem as well as the replacement program.

Or, Sony will ship you the optical block and you can change it in a matter of five minutes. It might actually take you longer to move your SXRD to access the side of the cabinet (right hand side) than the actual optical block replacement.

I did the changeover for a family member (60" SXRD) last year, and the TV's picture was instantly restored. I did take a photos showing the process, but never did post them. Quite easy to do.

Unfortunately, it's likely a temporary fix. The new optical block may fail again, but you'll at least get a few more years out of what is otherwise, in my opinion, one of the finest RPTVs ever made.

Is the optical block faulty on all the SXRD sets? My brother purchased a 60A3000 on my recommendation. I think he is kind of ticked off at me after I mentioned that Sony had a huge issue with their SXRD sets.

From what I've read, it sounds like it will effect everyone at one time or another.

My step father has likely one of the last SXRD rear projection sets that Sony made and it's never had the problem yet.

It gets used daily for many hours and he's had it for years.

Last time I was at his place I put in Avia and checked and he doesn't have the problem.

Still.... If Sony would send him the replacement parts for free... He ought to sign up for that!

He did recently get an email notification of the lawsuit and settlement and extended warranty and so on.

Is it really that simple?? I had read that it's not a quick and easy process.

Yes, it's really not a matter of "if" but "when." I have a three-year-old 60A3000 and no issues so far, but I don't have many hours on it at all. I love the image and hope I can get at least another 1-2 yrs out of it.

My original OB failed a few months ago, the replacement OB was arguably worse, and the replacements replacement was tolerable, but is now getting worse. i'm shocked to see u found a good replacement OB since I was told all OB's now are refurbished considering they are not made new anymore and the refurbished ones really aren't any better(prob why i've had horrible replacements). Sony already made me an offer for a refurbished KDL55EX501 and 6 mo factory warranty, but chances are i'll get a lemon claim from best buy and be given enough credit for that model brand new.

I'm really hoping mine holds on. I bought my SXRD 50A2000 in December, 2006, and it hasn't had any problems so far.

I'm just worried that Sony's extended warranty plan will end just before mine gives out.
