USA Passive vs. Powered?

I recently replaced my HTiB receiver (LG LH-E9674) with a REAL receiver (Pioneer VSX-520-K), and I am wondering if I have to replace my passive sub with a powered one. The old LG had the tension-spring type of connection and the new Pioneer has an RCA plug. I bought a cable that has RCA on one side and a pair of stripped wires on the other end so I can actually connect the passive sub to the Pioneer, but I don't think I'm getting any response from it. Will it take more than just a miracle cable to make the sub work? Will I need to buy a powered sub now?

The sub-out of your AVR is a line-level output. So, yes you will need either a new powered sub or a separate amp to feed the sub you have now.

Thanks for the quick response! A follow-up question, since I know nothing about amps: I can get a decent low-level powered sub for about $100, how does that compare to the price of an amp?

I'm not familiar with the sub that came with your LG. However, I found the manual online, and you would probably be better off gettin a new powered sub. Your current sub only goes down to 40 Hz, and appears to be rated at 3 ohms at that. A decent powerd sub would probably give better results.

chnandler ~ In order to have separate Amplifiers your receiver needs to have Pre-outs on back . The Pioneer VSX-520-K does not have them .

You would need to buy a powered subwoofer then .
