United Kingdom amazon.co.uk dispatch...

... using Royal Mail.

I just ordered GWtW from amazon.co.uk and it shipped yesterday via Royal Mail (got to love that, it's not like the queen herself going to bring it to me) but they didn't give me a tracking number at all. Is this normal?

That's normal for items shipped via Royal Mail to the US which is UK's equivalent to the USPS.

Here's more info on the tracking options for international shipments based on the shipping method used.

So the Royal Mail isn't even up to par with USPS? At least USPS gives you a number so somebody can find it for you if it doesn't show up... Not like UPS or FedEx or the others but at least there's a number you get.

Usually you have to pay extra for a tracking number with the USPS although Amazon.com may provide a tracking number for USPS shipments within the US free of charge. Delivery Confirmation within the US costs $0.70-0.80 Retail, $0.19 Electronic per package (Amazon may receive a bulk discount).

http://www.usps.com/prices/extra-services-prices.htm

You have to remember that the package is exchanging hands been the postal services of two different countries (it's not like the package is being shipped by UPS UK to UPS US; never changing services) ... I'm not sure if the USPS or Royal Mail have a system in place to support the tracking of packages amongst all the other international postal services. If it does it will be much more costly than what it would cost within country.

EDIT: According to the Royal Mail they offer the Recorded Signed For service for Corporate customers shipping items overseas via first/second class. Under this service there are two options:

Airsure® - these items are tracked abroad and you’ll get confirmation of final delivery
International Signed For® - these items are only tracked up until the point that they leave the UK

Airsure costs £4.50 per package ($7.10 USD) and International Signed For costs £3.70 per package ($5.84). The International Signed For service doesn't provide much benefit other than letting you know that the item left the UK but in either case I don't see any company that would be willing to eat that much money on a small package just to provide a free service to the customer.

I have ordered dozens of times from Amazon.co.uk to the U.S. without a tracking number. It is more reliable than most of the retailers shipping packages within the U.S. Most packages from them arrive within a week or so, delivered to your door by the Postal Service.

Agree. I've received five packages (3 from Amazon, 2 from blahDVD) within the last two weeks which were all shipped via Royal Mail and arrived within 6-12 days.

Never had a problem with Amazon UK and their Royal Mail service. Have used it at least a dozen times. Very satisfied customer here!

I've made four purchases from Amazon.co.uk, and haven't really been a fan of their shipping. I live in SC, and 3 packages arrived about two-and-a-half weeks after I ordered, and the third didn't show up at all. After a month, I called and was told to wait another week, then I called back and they resent the item, but it was still a pain. However, I'll still order from them if their prices are low enough, assuming I have a month or so before I want the item.

Anyone's ever ship via Deutsche Post DHL (estimated arrival date: March 05, 2010).

?

Not sure why it shipped via Deutsche Post DHL when I ordered it from Amazon.co.uk. Not only that but the delivery date is a long ways away....

I don't recall any of my packages being shipped that way in the past. What item did you order, was it a German Import, and did you buy directly from Amazon or a third-party seller?

That's exactly the same with me. But I live in Jakarta, Indonesia so they may have cost considerations by using Deutsche Post.

Have no problem with it so far. Great packaging, arrived usually 2-3 weeks (which I consider pretty good considering my country).

Yep looks like it was bought directly from Amazon. Maybe the item you ordered was warehoused in Germany or they were out of stock in the UK so they ship from another location that had the item in stock.

Update:

I ordered this on Feb 15, it dispatched on Feb 16 and arrived in my mailbox on Feb 19. Very quick service. The price paid appears on the outside for customs purposes which I don't really appreciate but this won't keep me from ordering from the UK again.

I watched GWtW last Friday night and it played just fine in my Region A player (just as expected).

That's pretty quick for an order sent to the west coast. In regards to the price being on the customs label, that's normal and required in the event an import tax needed to be calculated and added to the package. Otherwise they would have to open up the package to calculate the necessary tax. I'm presuming there was no import tax on your specific package ... anyone know what the limit is before a tax is accessed?

I hate not having a tracking number.... Feels like its taking forever to get here..

EDIT:: Arrived the 27th. Shipped out the 17th. So ~10 days for delivery to the West Coast using the German DHL.

Arrived in good condition and the same UK version I was expecting.

Now to watch Bourne in HD! woo

I placed an order with amazon.de a week ago* and recieved it via U.S. Mail today in perfect condition (I live in Colorado). I think the amazons of Europe actually do a better job with packaging than their U.S. counterpart. I've yet to recieve something damaged from amazon.uk. I've recieved more than a few damaged DVD/Blu-ray cases from amazon.us because of their damn bubble envelopes.

*One sweet Blu-ray copy of "Dances with Wolves". It's a limited edition of 10,000 units, and my copy is 8,101. You might want to order one soon if you're interested.
