Default Blu-ray wins either way?

Blu-ray wins either way?

I think everybody knows, that the war is going last a little while longer, after Paramount's decision of going HD-DVD exclusive. Personally I think we are going to end up in a situation with combo players.

On the software side both formats survive and just as an example HD-DVD movies will be from Paramount, Universal, Warner and Blu-ray movies from SONY, FOX……

But on the hardware side Blu-ray will turn out as the winner because the combo player basically is a Blu-ray player. Today you can make a combo player by using a chip like the one NEC makes. It doesn't require two laser optics as the LG player. The Blu-ray optic is already capable of reading in a 0.6mm distance and has the capacity to support HD-DVD in any other way.

On the other the laser optic from HD-DVD can't read Blu-ray discs, doesn't support the bandwidth, regional encoding, BD+ and so on. A combo player simply can't be based on HD-DVD.

Of course SONY isn't interested in combo players now, because they wan't as many studios and other related firms to support Blu-ray, but they do have combo as a contingency plan.

Toshiba will never be able to make a combo player without embracing the Blu-ray technology.

What do You think??

warner might not switch as they are a member of BDA.
While FOX will release BD in huge number compared to paramount. Paramount released about 30 BD since they backed the format. FOX released 29 titles to be released until the end of 2007 (4 months left)

I know, I just used them (Warner) as example.

I think blu-ray will win and I think the reason behind it is simply. If things continue as they are - even with blu-ray keeping only a 2:1 lead, sales will keep growing. Universal will eventually need to go neutral as the number of sales they potentially lose increase.

If things change, same thing could happen for blu-ray studios, but at this point it looks unlikely. I think the rest of the year will show us whether or not anything will change.

On the flip side the combo player is also an HD DVD player. Samsung's new combo will fully support both BD and HD DVD discs and do 1080p for both BD and HD DVD. I don't know if it'll support BD profile 1.1 or 2.0 but it meets the full specifications of an HD DVD player since it now carries the HD DVD logo. Like you said though Sony and Toshiba are not interested in combo players.

I would never buy a combo player. I said it before and will continue to say anything with a dud on it die.

hope it right.....if it ends up with combo players,,bluray may the commom dics used.. ..think of it this way...a dvd play can play cd,,but pple hardly use it to play cd....so in the future...if the its a combo thing,,,the player is gonna be used to play blu ray discs....and 1% of the time...pple might slide in a hd-dvd..so no mater how u twist it ,,turn it. or flip it...we'll win
