Default first 1/2 of 2010 BD sales grew by 84% over last year (same time)

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/res...tainment-20041

Quote:
Blu-ray Disc also continued to post impressive gains, with combined consumer spending on purchases and rentals of the high-definition disc estimated at $982 million for the first half of the year. Blu-ray Disc sellthrough rose 84%, to $733 million. Isolating the second quarter, Blu-ray Disc sales were up 112% to $363 million, thanks at least in part to the Blu-ray Disc success of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Avatar, which in April sold an estimated 2.7 million Blu-ray Discs in its first four days in stores.

Only 84%? Just kidding, that's excellent considering it's the summer and we're in a recession.

Great news Anthony! Q4 is going to be huge for the format. Inception will be the first blockbuster release in which Blu-ray sales > DVD's.

I don't make the news but someone had linked to it on an other forum and since I was involved in some discussions where growth of H1 2010 was discussed (and how Kosty calculated it as ~55% I thought it odd that it was not on here and worth starting a thread.

I don't think there should be any doubt that it will happen, unless some other movie surprises us and reaches that goal first , but Inception is guaranteed to do 50%+ on BD. The free DVD that Warner will include is going to aide it as well, but I think it will have a smaller effect on Inception than what it might have had with the Avatar combo, since Blu-ray ownership will be much greater by the time Inception is released.

I can't wait until the 4th Qt kicks in, these summer numbers aren't too exciting lol. Clash Of The Titans will be very positive for BD but the rest of the August schedule looks pretty bleak in terms of new releases.

Like Terjyn mentioned Avatar was around 40%. Terminator Salvation was also over 40%. However, we still have not seen a significant new release in which Blu-ray sales were greater than DVD's. Inception appears destined for such an accomplishment.

84% and counting. Blu is king! Now only if they could get Sony and Elvis Presley Enterprises to release The 68 Special and Aloha From Hawaii on Blu. Elvis's 2 finest concerts.

Does this statistic include rental chains purchasing more blu's? or is this just based on consumers? If so then I'm deffinately happy that more consumers are getting out there and purchasing blu-rays, hopefully studios are going to take notice and make a bigger push for blu's and maybe dipping into their back catalogues to get more customers!

why would that make a difference, do you really think that a few days would change the result that dramatically?

Plus the data sources are different, the DEG is based on Rentrak and Home Media Magazine is based on Nielsen Videoscan and an internal estimate to account for Wal-mart and Sam's Club sales not included in the Nielsen Videoscan report.
DEG looks at both. But you are right that HMM uses first alert (instead of the real VS numbers and they do estimate some of the missing numbers while DEG has a much more complete picture to work off of.

Quote:
The data from DEG is different from the Home Media Magazine figures that Kosty tracks and compiles over there that are based on the weekly Nielsen Videoscan first alert report figures. The lower figures over there are just assuming a lower figure for Walmart sales and thats probably a good thing that DEG/Rentrak has more time and more sources to figure out that Wal-mart is selling more Blu-ray than Home Media Magazine is estimating on a weekly basic. That implies Wal-mart Blu-ray sales are up a lot this year and BD is becoming more of a mainstream J6P thing.
I think there might be more to it, and since I don't know where he gets his numbers from it is hard to say where it went wrong. For example if he uses the % each week then they are no where near precise enough to get 2009 numbers, on the other hand if he is using the numbers from 2009 (and since he has older numbers) then that would be wrong because HMM re-evaluated how they calculate things.

In the end does it matter? we now know the ~55% growth was wrong and that is all that counts unless one is interested in finding out where it went wrong in order to not make the same mistake twice. But if that is the case then I would look at his numbers again because I used the % from HMM and a weighted average and got roughly 80%

the sell through numbers should be mostly consumers. Since the big rental chains don't buy from stores. But could include small mom & pop places in the middle of no-where who might buy through retail. On the other hand the report included players and rental as well http://www.degonline.org/pressreleas...Q10release.pdf

Funny to read this post the day after I hear about The Losers being the first theatrically released movie to do over 50% in BD during its first week while competing with a DVD edition.

Inception will sell like gangbusters in BD, I'm sure, but it won't be the 50% milestone.

I am keeping an eye on that one. It's a huge hit that is made to be enjoyed in high def. Just in the last three days two co-workers purchased blu-ray players. Everyone in the office mentions my name when there's something related to movies or hd related and there's increased interest every day it seems. For most of us, its old news, but regular consumers are actually buying more blu-ray players now (just my observations). By Q4, the instal base for Blu will be large enough to get > 50% of total sales for Inception. *** after reading my post, I have to admit that I become a huge when I visit this place .

unfortunetly some think it is still 2007

at this rate I think BD will have 100 market share and be artound for 20 years and some will still be proclaiming it a failure
