Default Essential Books About Films / Director Books

What are your essential books about films? It can be a book devoted to a film, a book about a director, or simply a book related to films or movie-making.

Here are just three I would highly recommend. Assuming you share a likeness for these films or authors...

ROGER EBERT: THE GREAT MOVIES

A great reference containing the late great Roger Ebert's reflections on some of cinema's finest films. Even if you don't "like" critics or don't agree with his praise of all these films, anyone who genuinely appreciates film and film discussion will want to have this book on their shelf. There are actually three volumes in this series. Buy them all or any one of the three!

JFK: THE BOOK OF THE FILM

This book is a stunning work and one of the greatest companions to a movie that one could have. It features the original screenplay written by director Oliver Stone and Zachary Sklar and contains not just the dialogue and descriptions of each scene, but has references to key sources and documents that Stone used in crafting the film. Once you wade through all of that, there an endless array of articles, interviews and press pieces related to the film both for and against Stone's movie. No matter what you believe about the assassination, this book is invaluable as a reference in regards to the movie itself, as it was portrayed by Stone.

THE FRIEDKIN CONNECTION

If you are like me and consider "The Exorcist" one of the greatest films ever put on screen, then you will want this book! Heck, even if you don't, you may want this book! It is a delightful work by a well-known director who doesn't just list facts about his movies in detached fashion, or blow his own horn, but instead reveals his memories in making each of his significant films. It is also a great story about Friedkin, the person, who started out in TV, took no film classes, and simply worked his way up Hollywood's ladder at a time when the industry was liberal and allowed the talents and controversies of those like Friedkin to flourish.
