United Kingdom Highlander

Just a quick one in reference to the just posted review of Highlander by blu-ray.com

Dr Svet (reviewer) mentions that he does not understand why the "little girl saved from the nazis" scene was kept...

The scene is actually extremely important, as the little girl is obviously ... Rachel (Connor's assistant and friend).
Also, the scene is a tie in to the excellent Queen song "A kind of Magic" (Connor's answer when Rachel asks how he could survive being shot by the Nazi soldiers).
That the scene was missing in most of the US edits is a true shame ...

I never understood the relationship between Connor and Rachel until I saw this scene for the first time. I always thought she was a past love, etc. but this makes it much better and poignant.

Good evening Elandyll,

And thank you for the note

A quick clarification - the reason why I questioned the presence of the scene is because it is quite controversial. It actually splits a longer sequence where McLeod first tells Rachel: "Tell them I am immortal" then the cut with the Nazi scene comes and, consequently, McLeod addressing Rachel again: "You are such a romantic Rachel. You always were" etc. In my opinion, the placement is very, very awkward. If the director's intention was only to reveal how the two met, then the scene makes even less sense. With other words, I always assumed that there must have been some sort of a romantic relationship between McLeod and Rachel yet their conversation implies otherwise.

In any event, the UK disc contains the Director's cut with this notorious scene intact, so fans of the film should be pleased.

Do you think the U.S. release will include all these extra scenes? I am thinking of importing this one.

And yeah according to the reviewer everything on the disc, all the extras too, is playable on U.S. players.

Great movie and I thought many of the scenes looked fantastic on Blu Ray. However many darker scenes contained a criss cross like film grain that I've never seen before. It was very apparent and kind of strange. It was only for a few scenes but it really was distracting. Excellent movie though.

I think this is one of the scenes from the director's cut. It is pretty darn awesome. And yes, the UK import is region-free. I just got my copy in the post today, and it is awesome!

Actually without this scene it would not make sense, but with it it clearly shows that Rachel has stayed with Connor from this point and that she clearly fell in love with him over the years, and stayed with him in the hope he would let her in and love her.Without the Nazi scene it would make no sense to the why she is actually there and protecting his secret .

Default Horrendous film grain...

The amount of film grain in this release is absolutely horrendous in some shots. Can someone tell me why it looks so bad on a HD Ready (768x1366) 37" screen? I thought that Ghostbusters was bad...

Actually, Highlander looks terrific!

It looks as it does because this is how it was filmed. Simply put, this one of the best catalog titles Optimum Home Entertainment have released since they entered the Blu-ray market.

Highlander was always a grainy film.

I don't really see how that scene with Rachel necessarily implies a romantic relationship - it could just as easily imply a father / daughter relationship.

I think it's basically open as to how the viewer wants to interpret it.

Perhaps Play.com or SendIt.com? I wouldn't know for sure. I'm planning on purchasing this. It's Region Free, right?
