We're in the process of moving from an apartment with carpet to a condo with hardwood. I'm planning on getting rubber isolation feet for under our sub (a front-firing Polk PSW12). The only thing I'm nervous about is that we're now going to have people below us. Any suggestions on not rattling the neighbors. I don't know if this matters, but the floors are heated, so I'm guessing there may be some form of insulation between the floors of the building?

Moving is a little vague... Are you buying this condo or renting it? Any chance you can talk to the previous owners and get the information from them? If not, like BRF mentioned, apartment personnel or try (if you can) to find out who the contractors are and look into it with them... that's if the place is yours and fairly new. Another thing you can do is carpet with a few layers of insulation under it.
But like I said, If your buying this place getting the proper work done will be the best solution. Look at Niubniubs, he did the floors with some insulation under it... might be an option. |

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like our heated floor was put in when the building was built, which would more than likely make it piped heat (rather than electric). This would put a layer of concrete between the floors. This will hopefully deaden any sound which would otherwise disturb our neighbors.

you can also probably isolate it, using a subdude, or via our sticky here and building a 'gramma riser' care of big daddy...
DIY Risers albeit it wont resolve all the challenges, it will help deter sound directly going thru the hardwood. |

EDIT: Actually, I read it wrong, the regular SubDude is 1/4 inch taller, and is 5-cents cheaper than the HD (market prices were listed as $50 for the regular & $60 for the HD). I guess I'll get the regular SubDude. Last edited by OG Pooh; 07-19-2010 at 05:26 PM. |

The only sound that comes from me to them is through the Window Wall. The sound wave vibrations just can't be cut off 100%. if you want that I think we have to buy a barn in farm country ;p Hopefully your new neighbors will be as cool as mine and help you find what the correct levels you can play with before having them start to get pissed off. frank |

Well, I received my Subdude about three days after I ordered it. I would let you all know what I think of it, but... I placed it (still in the box) on the roof of my car to make room for some boxes during our move, forgot it there and watched it blow off and get demolished by the dump truck that I pulled out in front of as I merged onto a main road near the old place. Right now I've got our sub turned down, and am okay with the sound & no complaints from the neighbors so far. I may reorder one in the near fufture.
