Default Toshiba to release glasses free 3DTVs by the end of 2010?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/t...for-q4-launch/

Are they finally going to start shipping out 3DTVs that don't require glasses?

Quote:
Hot news out of Japan if you're an eager 3D beaver: a report from Toshiba's home nation indicates that the company has three models of glasses-free 3D displays in the pipeline, which are being prepared for launch "before Christmas" at prices of "several thousand dollars" each. As you might recall, we got our first inkling about Toshiba Mobile Display's multi-parallax technique back in April, which is when the above 21-inch panel was being touted along with promises of eliminating eye strain and widening 3D viewing angles. We suspect that by now Toshiba has put a slinky bezel on the thing and started thinking up alphanumeric product names for it, though do bear in mind that queries to its press office were deflected with the boilerplate "no comment" response.

This looks interesting. If it works I may have to get one.

Now we're talking.

I would go for a Real3D solution too provided that I can have my prescription added to the glasses. I wear glasses no matter the technology.

My guess is no.

What I mean is you can already get glasses-free 3D for specific uses (medical machines, Nintendo 3Ds, some laptops). In the end the issue is that a big screen with many people viewing it, the device needs to send the two images to each person and they can move around (i.e. if the guy on the left-or right- sits on the edge of his seat or reclines, his angle to the screen changes) and so is difficult to make a display that works for every home and every person every time. Plus since the article says 21" and “Toshiba Mobile Display's” that this could be more for PC’s/laptops then HTs

They were referring that the 21 inch display was when they first saw the Toshiba Mobile Display's multi-parallax technique at work in April.

Also the title is of the article when clicking on the link read as... Toshiba reportedly prepping glasses-free 3DTV for Q4 launch, so if it was a monitor screen of some sort it wouldn't have said TV.

When I first saw the thread title on the main page, I thought it was called," Toshiba to release 3DTV that don't work by the end of the year."

It'll go down over time. I mean seeing as this will be the first wave of TVs I'm sure these first few years will see constant improvements. It should be a while before the industry finds its sweet spot with the technology to the point that it'll become the standard when making one of these babies.

I know that is what endgate said. BUT if you go to the original Yomiuri article the 21" is one of the models they mention

Toshiba plans to introduce three models, including one with a 21-inch screen, and will sell them for several hundred thousand yen, the sources said, adding the TVs' release likely will coincide with the year-end shopping season.

Depends if you assume that they don't have some facts wrong. This is a rumour in a Japanese article. Simple translation mistakes such as the difference between a TV for an HT and some screen for an other reason can easily be made. Also many people don’t know the difference between a TV and a display.

Yes, you do bring up a great point. I guess were just going to have to wait until either Christmas time or when Toshiba makes an official announcement.

I cannot unnderstand how they will be able to make objects appear as if they are coming out of the screen.

This has NOTHING to do with Blu-ray technology and news. There is a 3D section on this forum. That's where it belongs. And buy the way, I posted this news there already.

Maybe it works similar to the Nintendo 3DS in that the 3D effect is more depth going into the screen rather than things looking as if they're coming out of it. It'll be interesting to see what this is like, but ultimately, I still don't care all that much about 3D.

If they can make that happen I'll board the 3D train - Right now I'm not into it.
