Default Dvds with Blu-rays arh!!!

This annoys me because if i wanted the dvd i would buy the dvd not the blu-ray.We're meant to be moving forward and slowly pushing dvds out so blu-ray can take its place so how is that going to happen if they're mixing them up like this. Can you imagine a VHS being sold with a dvd? its the same thing to me.Im trying to get rid of my dvds and they're growing again on my shelf like a weed you cant kill off.

A VHS tape is a huge hunk of plastic. If it was a tiny disc, I could very well imagine it being sold along with DVD.

I personally like them. I'm one of a few people I know that even owns a bluray player so its nice if I go to a friends and be able to bring a movie with me. If you have kids and going on long trip you have something for the portable dvd player. Forpeople who haven't made the transition yet, buying a combo pack is a good way to future proof themselves when they do. Hell I know people that still own VHS, my gf included dvd isnt going anywhere for a long time.

Actual argument I had with my brother who lives with me:
Quote:
ME: Why did you buy Kick-Ass on DVD? Why didn't you buy the Blu-ray Disc?
BRO: Because I don't have a Blu-ray player in my room and my friends don't have one either.
ME: The Blu-ray Disc comes with the DVD AND a digital copy.
BRO: I didn't know that, I thought it was Blu-ray only.
And no, I am not buying Kick-Ass again since I can watch his DVD copy. Oh and FYI: Amazon.com offered an exlusive DVD/VHS combo pack for The House of the Devil from 2009!

+1, I love them, gives me the ability to play anywhere as well as in my home theater, my wife goes to her friends house for movie nights some time with the girls and none of them have a blu ray player yet, perfect for having them take the dvd copy with her, or times when I'm letting my mom borrow a movie I have and I can lend her the dvd copy instead of her being stuck and coming over to my house to watch a movie

This has been discussed a lot of times, but how can they be 'growing' on your shelf when they are in the same case?

I personally don't mind them. I can rip them onto my computer, and lend them to friends/watch them on other TVs that aren't mine. Plus Apple Macs (which I use exclusively) will not play BDs any time soon, if ever. But then again, I'm a measly university student and nobody I know cares about Blu-rays or has a BD player, so...

I think that's why people find them useful. You can upgrade movies early, and without worrying that you're severely limiting the amount of places/things you can watch your new movie on. It rarely makes a difference in price, so whats the big deal? It does waste extra discs, I suppose. But still, this is not like VHS-to-DVD. DVDs will be around for a while and for many obscure titles (and especially older TV shows), the DVD will remain the definitive versions available for at least a very long time. I can't see a day when I ever have 100% Blu shelves.

It's not the same thing because a DVD can easily fit in the same case as the blu-ray so it's not really taking up extra space. And like Army of Dorkness said, it helps with the transition for people who are not into blu-ray yet.

They don't (typically) charge extra for it, it doesn't take up any extra space, and it encourages people to embrace the format by allowing them to also view the movie on laptops, in the car, in the bedroom, and everywhere else where DVD players still exist in most of our lives.

What's the problem again?

I don't care if a DVD is included, as long as:

1. The BD and DVD aren't on the same disc (flipper).
2. They're not in a DVD case.

Big +1. A digital copy I make myself from the DVD is far more useful (even if it does take a LITTLE more effort). If it was a download code (not a disk) to a DRM-free movie file, I wouldn't mind them as much.

I counted the other day and I've given my sister about 17 complimentary DVDs, she and I don't think they're so useless.

I sell the dvd copies to a friend of my mom’s.

$4 and I don’t have to keep them.

Of course you can always fashion ninja stars out of them!!!

I have tons of empty single Blu-Ray cases. I'm thinking of selling the DVD's to my friend and just putting the Blu-Ray in a single case. We'll see....

I don't mind when a DVD comes with the Blu Ray.

But,... When a Blu Ray is put in a DVD case... that is a problem.

Toy Story had both types of packaging. You could get both formats in either case. That wasn't cool.

Anyways,... Lots of my Disney discs come with the DVD and I like that. If I want to watch one of my movies and my kids want to watch the disney movie then there's lots of computers and stuff around the house where they are happy to watch the DVD.

I've got so used to it that I now keep DVDs of movies that I buy on Blu ray if they don't come with the DVD version.

Edit- The other reason I like them is sometime people want to borrow something. I'm really not into loaning out my movies but I practically don't give a damn about the DVD copy so I let them borrow that. Just the other day I lent ouf the DVD copy of the new Alice in Wonderland to someone... no problem.
