Default Kubrick's Best Director Nominations

Stanley Kubrick was nominated four times as Best Director by AMPAS. He never won in that category. Which time (or times) do you think he deserved it the most?

His only win was for Best Visual Effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He should have won for Dr. Strangelove, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange but 2001 losing to Oliver is the one that is really baffling to me.

How the **** did 2001 not win. 50 years later or however freaking old it is.....still holds up visually.

It doesn’t matter. He already has an Oscar.

I have no desire to ever see 2001 again but he should have won for it.

I happen to be in the extreme minority that thinks 2001 is awful, so I gotta go with the superb Barry Lyndon, which somehow manages to be a masterwork despite Ryan O'Neil's Irish accent being very unconvincing.

I'm a major Kubrick fan, so probably any of those choices would satisfy me. Each is brilliant in its own way.

But I've got to stick with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Rarely have I been so intellectually provoked, visually stunned, and totally engaged. It may have been so many decades ago, but I still remember seeing it in the theater (which sadly doesn't exist any more).

A Clockwork Orange. Boundless inventiveness and boldness.

I've watched A Clockwork Orange twice in the last week (alas, working during the first viewing). And I would agree with the above comment. It's bold, aggressive and vicious...whist simultaneously being blackly comic, quirky and operatic.

My choice for the Oscar.
