Screen legend Robert Ryan (The Wild Bunch, The Professionals) stars alongside Burl Ives (The Big Country) and Tina Louise (TV’s Gilligan’s Island) in this bleak and wintry western from cult director André De Toth (Pitfall, The Indian Fighter). Tough-as-nails Blaise Starrett (Ryan) is about to face a showdown with a fellow rancher whose wife Starrett happens to be in love with. But this small-town conflict is nothing compared to what's on the horizon when outlaw Jack Bruhn (Ives) and his vicious gang ride into town. On the lam after a brutal robbery, the outlaws terrorize the townspeople and hold them captive, even as Bruhn lies dying from a bullet wound to his chest. When Starrett eventually leads the homesteaders on a trail out of harm's way, the tension explodes to an unforgettable climax. Filled with action and suspense, this is one Day you'll never forget! Top-notch screenplay by legendary writer Philip Yordan (The Man from Laramie), based on a novel by television veteran Lee E. Wells (Highway Patrol). Wonderfully shot by Russell Harlan (Witness for the Prosecution) and featuring Nehemiah Persoff (Some Like it Hot), Lance Fuller (This Island Earth), Elisha Cook Jr. (I Wake Up Screaming) in strong supporting roles.

From Turner Classic Movies....Day of the Outlaw (1959) is one of those little-known gems that hard-core movie fans love to discover. At a time when television and movie studios were grinding out one generic Western after another, Day of the Outlaw added twists that made it unique.

Robert Ryan stars as Blaise Starrett, hard, bitter and remote as only Ryan could play him. A cattleman, he's out to settle scores with Hal Crane (Alan Marshal), head of a small town of settlers putting out barbed wire and starting farms. Complicating the rivalry is the fact that Starrett was once the lover of Crane's young wife (Tina Louise). On the surface, it's rather standard fare for a fifties Western but the first twist comes from the locale. The action is set in Wyoming in the middle of winter. No dusty, sun baked streets here, just white snow and patches of ice lending a deathly quiet and slowing all movement to a slog.

Trailer (this trailer is outstanding...it makes me want to see this movie right now)

This is a really fantastic western, and it's about time it was released here in the US.

I just watched this on the Criterion Channel streaming service, and I dug it quite a bit. If you have access to the Criterion Channel, then I recommend checking this out in the next couple of days because it's leaving the service at the end of August.

I really love this western, and although usually the best thing in any robert ryan movie is robert ryan, in this is burl ives, he's fantastic, creates one of the most memorable characters in western history. The face-off between these 2 heavyweights is what makes westerns such a compelling watch.

Also tina louise had to be one of the most sensual women in movies history, and Im giving too many hyperbole but this movie is so good that it doesn't feel like Im exaggerating one bit. I will admit that I've always been an andre de toth fan.

Im not enamoured with the eureka PQ, though, I don't know if anyone can compare the kino vs the eureka picture, Id love to read your opinions if anyone has both.

The Eureka is technically better encoded than Kino's disc but in-motion it's not really noticeable since the master is not all that demanding to begin with. I hope Kino (or any label) might consider reacquiring the film to give it a more proper remaster.

If you really like this film (as I do) the commentary by Jeremy Arnold is quite good on the Kino release. I have both releases and enjoy revisiting both of them from time to time.
