Soon to be:

Yeah, I hate it too, but you have to admit that it's sheer marketing genius. Not only do they get you to double (or triple or quadruple) dip when they reintroduce the "new improved" version, but by manufacturing scarcity, they drive up current demand.

Used to be ~7 years, but I think that's gone all to hell recently.

Still not sure why Fantasia was only made available for less than six months.

Disney may have noticed that it wasn't selling that well and decided to pull it early.

It was decided to vault early before it was even released. Even in commercials when it first came out it stated available for a VERY limited time instead of the usual limited time only.

To My guesstimate Beauty and the Beast is next. Because Beauty and the Beast sequels are coming out in fall and their commercial says for a VERY limited time. My assumtion is sometime within jan. - march of next year. But you should be able to still get it for a little while after. I still see Pinnoccio, snow white, and fantasia all the time. Fantasia not as much tho.

Just look in my collection under Disney / Buena Vista and Pixar. They are all listed there.

It was always planned for a very limited release window.
just like the original DVD and VHS releases of it were.
And Fantasia has always been a big seller in any format.

I have my suspicions - but it had nothing to do with sales. It's possible that Lasseter - who worked on the Fantasia World project - might have some inclination of finishing that version by including the three Fantasia shorts produced by Roy Disney for the never completed Fantasia 2010 - namely, Lorenzo, One by One, and The Little Matchgirl. You produce four to six more shorts, you have a new movie, possibly (or at this point, probably) a DTV sequel that wouldn't stink up the joint. It would only make sense to re-release Fantasia at that time to help promote both properties (and who knows, maybe this time with Fantasia 1982 to help sweeten the deal).

That's my hope, anyway. I don't know what happened, and from what I can tell, Disney aint talkin'. Might also have been Disney knowing they were scuttling the BD-Live in favor of Second Screen, and maybe they have bigger plans for the title in the future.

It wasn't sales.

Guys, add Princess Mononoke to the list. Apparently, Disney has confirmed that Princess Mononoke is no longer licnesed for North America and there are no plans to relicense it. No Blu-ray coming for this one.

That's a shame, but we still might see it on Blu-ray if another company is able to buy the distribution rights.

As far as I know, the only other Studio Ghibli title that Disney doesn't own North American rights to is Grave of the Fireflies, but I'm still hoping that whoever owns the rights eventually releases a Blu-ray. According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
Following the 2009 bankruptcy and liquidation of Central Park Media, A.D.V. Films acquired the license to Grave of the Fireflies and began releasing it on DVD on July 7, 2009.[8] As of September 1, 2009, the movie is now licensed by ADV's successor, AEsir Holdings; with distribution from Section23 Films

Thing about it? Hayao Miyazaki is very untrusting of American distributors when it comes to Studio Ghibli anime titles. Especially after the fiasco over Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind being chopped up and rebranded as Warriors of the Wind.

Matter of fact, Studio Ghibli only agreed to grant Disney an exclusive license to all of their titles with the one exception that Disney not edit one single frame of content of any of its films. The only changes that Disney could make to the film is to add an English audion track, or an English dub, as well as English subtitles. Beyond that, their licensing contract forbid Disney from editing any of the actual content.

It's sad because Disney was granted the license to Only Yesterday and while Disney could release that film, they absolutely refuse to release it because they have decided that it contains objectionable material for a family oriented company to release. Apparently, there's a scene in the movie where they talk about menstration cycles and Disney thinks this would would their image.

Ironic, since Walt himself produced an educational film for young women called The Story of Mensturation. Of course, I haven't seen them release that on DVD either.
