Default Broken 60GB PS3 UK model.. What to do?

I looked around the net. Apparently you can call Sony for advice. But since I'm working and its a Sunday I thought I'd ask here first.

BTW, Sony UK number is apparently 08705998877. Thats just so that when I get home I can use this place as easy reference.

In regards to my problem, I have a 60GB machine. I've opened the machine up completely to get the dust out. According to a friend if I call that number above I can add £130 and get a refurb/new machine. But what If I wanted a slim model? Can't I just request a brand new machine if I send my old one in? I know I will lose all the PS2 BC and stuff but I don't use it.

The only thing wrong with my machine is the laser is skipping on Blu ray movies. Everything else is running fine. Sometimes the disc gets stuck when ejecting as well. But the core of the machine is working fantastic. At the moment I would prefer a slim since its quieter, smaller and has the new HDMI on it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Richie.

Sony will only replace your unit with the same model (referbed).
I would recommend checking out Marine Mike's thread about fixing PS3's and trying to fix it yourself. A lot cheaper than having Sony do it. Then if you want to upgrade just sell your newly fixed ps3. Since it's PS2 BC you should get a fair amount for it making the total upgrade cost less than having Sony fix yours. Good luck!

There is a guy who is in Michigan, USA who will fix it for pretty cheap. He has done a ton of them even my original 60 gig. http://jdelectronicsinc.com/ is his website. I think he is charging $50 plus shipping. Idk what that is in pounds but he is good.
