I had heard that initially the yield rate for BD50 were low, but is that still the case? I would be suprised now it is wasn't close to 100%.

It seems typical. once the hd-dvd camp finds a flaw early on in regards to BD, it carries out past the expiration date. I've had a lot of inquiries to counter arguments, and the generalized response to those arguments tend to be
"Yes, they're right... but that's old news, and there's a solution" |

BD is kicking ass at IFA right now... but I'm still waiting to see what the hd-dvd camp has to say in their press releases tomorrow.

- Nobody outside Sony does BD50 (Amir) - Everybody outside Sony gets 10% (this article) It's simply impossible for Sony to have a magic method, since they want to sell the installations (it's one way to recoup the cost of Blu-ray), so they would be doing everything they can to get yields up ASAP. Now, only a few sites have recently gotten BD50 lines installed, so it's possible initial tests runs are 10%. And naturally that becomes the number to run with forever. Because, there are a lot of people that want it to be true. I honestly have no reliable data one way or another. But, it seems to me highly that they manage only 10/40% yields and yet there are VERY few reported real world defects. Considering how poor the QC on HD DVD combos are, that would imply a massively better QC process for Blu-ray. Which, to the CONSUMER, is what matters. Fear not when you're boiling your HD DVD disc, realize that Sony is taking a bath on BD50 production, and that will make all the effort seem trivial. ![]() Shouldn't they be looking at the disaster in their own house before worrying about Blu-ray?
