![]() http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archi...s-Blow-Up.aspx Counterfeit PS3 controllers that look "practically identical in appearance" to the real deal have hit the market, and Sony is warning people that bad things may happen if you use them. Despite warning consumers of the possibility of explosions, uncertain quality, and incompatibility with PS3 software updates, Sony doesn't give any guide as to what these counterfeit controllers look like. Moreover, it's unclear if there have been any actual reports of explosions, or if Sony's just advising people that these things are theoretically possible when you don't buy unlicensed peripherals. Either way, if someone beckons you into a dark alley opens up a stained raincoat and wants to show you their goods – beware of cheap joysticks. http://ps3.ign.com/articles/112/1122981p1.html Sony issued a consumer alert earlier this week advising all PlayStation 3 owners to only use first-party, genuine PS3 wireless controllers. The company says counterfeit controllers, which look identical in appearance, have been introduced into the market and could explode. "SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation 3 wireless controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous," Sony warns. "It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, or other property." Sony also said it plans to introduce software updates to disable these counterfeit and unlicensed controllers. |

Well I'm not a fan of 3rd party controllers, but Sony doesn't make arcade sticks. Good thing I haven't spent $250 on one of those yet.
This whole thing just seems like Sony's attempt to serious limit usb functionality to prevent further jailbreaking. EDIT: Hopefully all the Guitar Hero Rock Band peripherals are still working. Last edited by KamiAmaya; 09-24-2010 at 07:35 AM. |

This article is referring to "knock off" controllers, not 3rd party controllers. Cheaply made controllers that look exactly like Sony DS3 controllers coming from foreign markets, like Japan, and possibly being sold on eBay and other sites. |

Ummm...did you actually read the context of the original post? The whole point of the firmware was to remove unlicensed and counterfeit controllers from being used with the PS3. Even third-party controller makers like Mad Catz, Pelican, Nyko, and the bunch have a license of some sort with Sony, which is why their controllers won't be affected by this. If you're willing to buy a knock-off piece of crap counterfeit controller that might screw up your PS3 if you have to plug it in to charge, are you also going to blame Sony for that?

With my 360, I was force to buy an overpriced MS harddisk to add a bit of space. So you won't hear me complaining about Sony's policy regarding peripherals! |
