That's ridiculous! I thought they have to put out every fire regardless?

Hopefully Steve will chime in and give his thoughts.

most tax dollars fund fire companies, I know here they have Bingo and other stuff to generate revenue. Of course, they dont deny service to no one. I know our ambulances starting charging for the trip to the hospital but it is waived if you prove you cant pay it.(After you get better)

I am already sensing lawsuit

Another example to show that "money" truly is the root of all evil.

they could still have atleast showed up and just asked for the $75 upfront if they wanted it that badly instead of just ignoring them..what if the fire had spread..

If the family of the burnt house doesn't file a lawsuit, the neighbors should for endangerment.

It did. It killed the family's dogs and cat.

It did. The fire department saved the neighbors' house and left the guy's to burn.

Emergency services like this should not have to be opt-in. And, at the very least, if they must be opt-in (which is retarded), you should be able to opt-in at any time—especially during an actual emergency.

"hey, my house is on fire, but I'm not sure if I opted in , will you put it out?"

"Do you have $75? If so, we will!".

"I do, but I dont have the cash right now...can I send you a cheque?"

"yeah, but by the time we recieve it your house will be a charred mess!"

" I guess I'm royally screwed then?"

"yep, but don't worry...the guy next door opted in, so we'll save his house instead!"

As you guys have already said...that's absolutely ridiculous.

Put out the guy's house and settle the monetary issue after. It's a measly $75, I'm sure after you put his house out and save him he'd gladly pay well above that much if he had to.

Put the fire out then charge the $75 annual fee and some sort of penalty fee if you have to.

If you have ever been to Obion County TN this makes perfect sense. It is a small rural county likely run by old men who are way past the point where they should make any decisions. I grew up less than an hour from there and it will never change, the governments just keep the status quo and try to collect money that they do not return to the community.

I didn't read the article (my best comments come when I'm completely ignorant about the subject ) but if I recall correctly, the great Chicago fire was at a time when fire services were privatized, and due to the enormity of the fire, and the unorganized response...... Fire departments as we have them now were established........ I'm guessing po-dunk hasn't gotten the memo yet.

I don't even know what to say. I hope that one of the many animal rights people get a hold of this story. hmph.

Also, did you know you also get a bill from using an ambulance service? They charge you of course for any supplies they use as well as charge you per mile to the ER. We got quite the bill when my mom had to go.

According to the article, the guy did offer to pay the fee, telling the faux fire department that he would pay them whatever they wanted if they save his home. They said no. Later in the article, the fire department explains that they can't do that because if they offered that, no one would pay the (extortion) fee without any fire.

Right. There's a fee associated with that so they can recoup their costs, which makes sense. At least they pick you up and then charge you afterward instead of just leaving you to die if you haven't paid already.

That is messed up.

I would have assaulted somebody if my house was left to burn with my dogs in it.

There was a local story here about some homeowners outside city limits had to pay similar fees to help protect themselves from this exact scenario. I get that there may be fees, but to just let a home (including pets) burn, that's just wrong.

Why not just charge him after putting the fire out?

True. I believe that it's free for the ambulance to come to the scene, but you are charged up the wahzoo if you get on that gurney.......
