Wow, that framing is just completely different!
![]() I own the UK release which is the same ratio as the US one and I have to say I prefer that one. The AUS release seems to have way too much information on the vertical and not enough on the horizontal which to me makes it feel a little cramped. Kind of interesting that both are still showing more information in their respective ratios - more picture information on the vertical with the AUS release and more on the horizontal with the US/UK releases. I wonder if the framing has been changed automatically with a one-size fits all approach. I'm thinking it might be considering the way it's been cut in this frame. KaiGusto: I'm assuming this may be due to the jpeg compression based on the small file size of only 77kb, but when capturing did you notice the loss in detail shown in these caps also? The only reason I ask is because the AUS release is a fair bit darker (look at the lack of discernable detail in Andrei's face in comparison to the US release) and it also seems to have DNR applied if it's not the result of your capture process and/or jpeg compression (see the lack of detail in the strap thread pattern of Andrei's chest armour). I'm hoping that's just due to the high jpeg compression. If not I would definitely recommend the UK or US release between the change in aspect ratio and detail loss. |

Hey yeah it was just a quick snapshot in JPEG format with compression.
PNG Uncompressed: ![]() When you overlay this image and the BD.com image, you can't really see any difference in regard to PQ (I use Photoshop layers). Last edited by LordCrumb; 12-21-2010 at 08:46 AM. |

Its a bit of a weird one this release, it has the usual Sony Pictures layout for the back cover, yet doesn't mention Sony anywhere, only 'Revolution Entertainment' on the spine.... division of Sony maybe?

EzyDVD lists the distributor as Sony Pictures:
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/814341 What you might find is that Revolution Entertainment, a company based in NZ and partnered with Horizon Entertainment here in Australia, has come to a distribution agreement with Sony Pictures and so even though the titles are theirs they are using Sony's distribution infrastructure and arrangements to release their titles. It's strange though because their website also lists a number of other titles. One of them is Outlander, which they show they released the DVD and yet the Blu-ray I own is released by Warner Bros and has no mention of them at all on it. Features the same artwork though.

![]() Having said that, if I owned the Australian one I most certainly would. Some of the outdoor scenes when they are first entering Chernobyl have fairly wide fields of vision with the action placed all over the frame. Naturally I haven't seen the AUS release but if the screencap is any indication it would be getting to the point where it would start to crop that action on the left and right hand sides of the screen. I'm OK with open matte assuming it's a change from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 as often happens, but this is quite a bit different and changes the composition of the frame completely. I just prefer the version which represents the director's intent. |
