What do you feel defines the distinction between a horror film and a thriller film?
-The explicitness of the violence and/or gore

* Upon looking through the titles listed in the "Thriller" category on this site, I feel I need to be more specific. For me, the biggest distinction between a thriller and a horror is that a thriller does 2 very specific things: #1. It does not let the viewer know exactly what's going on. (Who's the bad guy? Could the good guy be the bad guy? Is there a bad guy? Could it be aliens? Is there dreaming vs reality? etc.) #2. Continuously challenges the viewer to restructure what they believe is their own understanding of the situation. MANY MANY MANY films listed under the "Thriller" category on this site, in my eyes, do not belong there.

Can you name any films that perhaps blur the line between the two genres?
The Scream franchise does a nice job of creating suspenseful thriller with "out of your face" gore/violence.

Which film title appeals most to you?
Penance

Of the sub-genres below, which three would you consider to be your favourites?
Erotic thriller
Mystery thriller
Psychological thriller

What would you expect the tone of a thriller film score to be?
-Slow and eerie

What would you expect from a thriller film opening?
-Other: Character and situation development... however it needs to be done. Caring about the people and the situation (preferably being able to relate to scenario) is key in making those surprise/twist moments really count in the psyche of the viewer. We have to imagine that the situation could easily happen to us or someone we care deeply about.

What is your favourite thriller film?
The first thriller that always comes to mind is THE GAME. THE SIXTH SENSE is also a "quick to mind" title. I still remember the feeling I had when they came to a head at the end. They both kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and blasted me with complete shock factor at the end. Not too many films have had that kind of impression on me within the thriller genre.

Can you name some thriller films you would regard as ‘essential’ to fans of the genre?
Black Swan
Dark City
Scream

The Usual Suspects (even though I don't like it )
Event Horizon
Paranormal Activity
Twelve Monkeys
Stir Of Echoes
Identity
Wild Things
Primal Fear

LOST (TV Series)
I Am Legend (short story is much better for suspense/thriller)
Deception
Apt Pupil
The Cave
(DVD only at this time)

Hope this helps.
