Default I Chose Blu-Ray But...

I need some help/answers.

I bought my Panasonic BD10A just over a month ago. I did this after about a year of reading and researching the two formats. What finally convinced me to go Blu was the content and support Blu-Ray clearly has. And of course, I read nothing but great reviews for the Panny (which I am incredibly happy with).

Okay, okay, so what' my problem? With recent articles, especially those coming out of IFA, and so much mention of BD-Java and profiles, I'm wondering if I bought my player too soon. If I understand the information correctly, my Panny will not be able to support upcoming features on BD.

Can someone clarify for me - did I buy too early? Will I need to buy a new player?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Default congrats on going blu...

I am not sure about your question so I will leave the pros on our forums to address your concern. Check to see about if your player has firmware updates. I own a ps3 which allows firmware updates. I hope that you will be fine, and your concerns will be addressed.

This is taken from Wikipedia:

"Some profile 1.0 players may be upgradeable via firmware update to profile 1.1 if they have the appropriate hardware, but no manufacturer has announced any such upgrade. When software authored with interactive features dependent on Profile 1.1 hardware capabilities are played on profile 1.0 players some features may not be available or may offer limited capability. Profile 1.0 players will still be able to play the main feature of the disc, however.

2.0 (BD-Live), also known as BD-Live, adds network connectivity to the list of mandatory functions and increases mandatory local storage capability to 1 GB. So far one manufacturer, Daewoo, has created a player with this profile, the Daewoo DBP-1000, and will hit the consumer market in the very near future. "

Everything I've read on other forums leads me to believe that your Panasonic BD10A will be upgradeable to profile 1.1 via a firware update.

Send an email (or call) to Panasonic and get their official word.

there are 4 profiles for BD

BD-Audio: no players so far, meant as an audio only player meant to be like SACD or DVD-A

BD-Video 1.0: most, if not all, players today

BD-Video 1.1: min video standard for new players launching after Octobre. The main difference is that 1.1 requires a second decoder for a second stream. With the second encoder the movie could have an added commentary video (for example) that is shown as a PiP.

BD-live: BD live is like 1.1 but the main difference is that it also is required to have an internet connection for alternate content. There are also other changes (like more static memory and stuff) to support this feature.

If you have a BD v1.0 and there is a PiP then the person authoring the title could decide to not give you an option for it or give you the option to hear but not see it.

"Live" content could be stuff like extra content (like making more language subtitles available on-line for DL, which gets saved to the static mem.) or live content (such as linking to the commercial internet site for merchandising purpose or some on-line gaming)
