Default HD-DVDefective

After sitting a long time on the fence of this format war, I went blu. What pushed me that direction, after looking at BOTH sides very objectively was that it seems that every HD-DVD release has problems! I was just tonight browsing HD-DVD forums and it looks like Heroes (which is non combo disk), Evan Almighty, and Hot Fuzz have had some playback issues.

Now, this is a silly place to do this, but if I'd say this on a HD-DVD forum they'd call me a troll. If I'd want to buy HD-DVD, which I kinda did, how on earth could I possibly justify it with all the STUPID problems they apparently have in their QA process? I mean really. It's insane. There was a public poll on AVS's HD-DVD software area reporting playback issues with 300, a mega blockbuster. The public poll had well over 10% people reporting defective disks? What if HD-DVD wins and they sell 5 million copies of a disk with 10% failure? WTF?

It makes me angry really, because if I wanted to buy HD-DVD tomorrow, I wouldn't be able to and trust my purchase?

Hmm, I could buy an off brand player (Venture, RCA), or pick HD-DVD's high end **Onkyo** player, and then buy overpriced combo disks which are riddled with problems? Where do I sign up? I'll drive my beloved Ford Pinto to whichever store I can buy them at. Sheesh.

End of rant.

besides who needs that dvd combo format anyways? its just more money to spend on hd-dvd which is useless anyways when you can get the blu-ray version of 300 or like TMNT on blu-ray for $5 cheaper. If they wanted to do the dvd combo format they should of went with the idea WB had where you can watch it in 480i and 480p if you dont have an hdtv like for instance i have corpse bride and last samurai from WB on blu-ray and on hd-dvd it has the same thing i think but instead of that stupid combo format just go with the 1 disc blu-ray for about $5 less

Welcome to the Blu side!

The really funny thing is the latest HD DVD talking point is about how low BD50 yields are. What makes this argument so funny is that:

a) they will never discuss their own yields of HD DVD combo discs, and
b) Regardless of what the yields are at the factory, a ridiculously high percentage of HD DVD discs that are pronounced good, don't work!

So, while defective BD discs are discovered at the factory and destroyed, defective HD DVD discs are packaged, sent to stores, and sold to consumers, who apparently have to do the QA process themselves. Then the upset customer has to return the disc to the store (who has to mark it as defective and submit it for reimbursement from the manufacturer, etc) and get another disc... which often also don't work. Then the whole process starts over again.

Personally, as a consumer, I'd much rather not have to do the QA myself, and just trust that whatever percentage of discs actually left the factory would actually work. I would imagine that stores and distributors would whole-heartedly agree as well.
