Default Univeral remote for both HD format players...

I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of universal remote I could buy to control both my hd dvd and blu ray players?

Default remotes

What other kinds of universal remotes are there besides the 1000? I don't think that I would be willing to spend 500 bucks on this remote.

Are they all good remotes? All these remotes will work with both blu ray and hd dvd players?

Spend $50 on a PDA on craigslist with an IR out

Download an app to turn it into a universal remote

Teach it all your button codes and such

Save lots of money and enjoy

Here's one

Harmony remotes are fantastic. Being an HT installer I've set up hundreds of them, and while not as fancy as some that I'll not mention as they make my head hurt, they are amazing devices.

They can essentially control anything with an IR input and remote control, from TVs, any player you can think of, light systems and air conditioning. It takes all your 16 remotes, input cycling, power cycling, hunting for the right one for volume, etc and basically puts it into 1 button. Want to go from watching TV to DVD? Just press a button, the inputs on the tv and surr sound switch automatically, the cable box turns off, the dvd powers on, and everything is ready to use like a normal remote. Your aged grandmother could use it.

For the smoothest experience, the 880 is really where you want to start, and you can find it for under $150 with some searching usually. It's worth the money over it's smaller brethren. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it. PM me and i'll be glad to go over anything with you.

Now you when you say Blu-ray player I am assuming you don't have a PS3 and a stand alone player right? If you do have a PS3 you need a Bluetooth enabled remote, or a remote that has a IR attachment via USB.

Yeah, please specificy whether you have a PS3 or a standalone Blu-ray player. If it's a PS3, the situation becomes much more difficult.

Overall, though, the Logitech Harmony remotes are FANTASTIC for the vast majority of home theatre installations. More complex solutions from AMX or Creston are great, but except for incredibly complex installations desiring full home automation, the Harmony remotes are the greatest things out there.

Also, don't feel compelled to buy the most expensive ones. Even the $100 have all the features most people will ever need. Make your choice based on which design is most appealing to you. They're all great.

I have the Philips Pronto for my HT room. I love the fact that I can customize each function, create the screens, etc. But is isn't for those that aren't PC savvy.

As to the OP, I am guessing he has a PS3. I still wish Sony had added an IR interface as MS did with the 360.
