Probably a silly question but anyone here have strange 'experiences' with sites & "new' members?
This is recent but I created an account on some site that loves Sony game products (PSP, PS3, etc), nothing strange yet? I make a topic in the PS3 forum about weather what I was deciding to purchase for the system (which I don't have yet) was good, I come back a few hours later and I'm banned. ![]() I go to the site with another browser to see what the rules were, and they seemed like the usual rules (such as what this site has (https://forum.blu-ray.com/faq.php?fa...forumrulesfull)), nothing out or the ordinary that I can tell, yet a NEW topic about PS3 games in a PS3 FORUM gets me banned? That's not silly, I've experienced similar although I didn't' get ban. For instance, recently I've received a warning from one of the top brass here. He said I made an infraction just because I was asking “if there's anyone who support or establish any group buy for particular title of the steelbook, because I would love to join.” I tried to replied and said sorry, let’s see what his answer and he never respond back. I posted that question in one of the steelbook discussion thread. Does it bother or even violated the rules? I'm not sure even if it is then this must be some kind of strict forum I've ever joined where you can't have much freedom to ask or to write (even I had written and asked with polite words). I'm trying to look and think about the link you've provided about the rules and there's nothing there mention - regarding my problem. Even if there is, a lot of people said words that are not really related to the topic that is given sometimes.. This is just a discussion thread (I'm not even forcing someone to create a group buy) so when someone have something in their mind that just pop up and try to ask then it’s normal because we wanted to discuss that’s the point of what the word "Steelbook discussion" isn't?? But probably I’m the unlucky one who got caught. I mean this is just a forum for all the blu-ray lovers. Well, it should be fun and relaxing. If asking about any group buy in the steelbook thread is violated the rules then it shouldn’t be called steelbook discussion?? Well, that just my thought. I can’t do much. No power no control to act. Once again I’m sorry if there’s anything offended, once again just sharing my experience in here. Hope it doesn't violate the rules. Last edited by ilovebluray; 08-27-2010 at 03:43 PM. |

It's so difficult to maintain a forum and given the fact that intentions are so often misunderstood, it's not hard to see why people would have misunderstandings. It's also very easy to take a "disciplinary action" personally. I haven't experienced unfair treatment on forums, but I've seen this topic of conversation brought up on multiple forums.
It's very hard for a moderator who must oversee an abundance of postings a day to make judgments that are always fair to everyone. However, I believe good moderators are able to find a middle-line that works for most people. The problem with new members is that since a history hasn't been established, a moderator can't take a history into consideration. That being said, I've been on forums where a user who has had thousands of postings has apparently posted something inappropriate and has been banned. Of course, by the time I see a user has been banned, it's too late for me to see what they were banned for (not that it's my business anyway ;-) ). I can see why a moderator may want to be extreme in some cases. A forum may be highly regarded and in order to keep to it's reputation, the cuts to a forum need to be ruthless. That being said, the rules must must must clearly state what is allowed and what isn't. In the case of the PS3 forum, it sounds like it wasn't clearly stated and the banning sounds pretty harsh. Not knowing anything about the situation, based off of what I read in that posting here, it seems to me a warning and a private message or email to the member would have sufficed, not a complete banning. Just some thoughts from a newbie of this forum ;-) Sabastian Last edited by sabastianc7; 09-11-2010 at 08:13 PM. Reason: clarification, shortening post to focus on one topic |

It could be that they "assume" you should understand. However, if I were a moderator, I would understand that not everyone may understand a rule, even if I think I've clarified. So, ideally, that particular moderator should respond back to you to make sure you know why the rules were violated. I think it's silly that they haven't responded. We have so many different ways of expressing reasons that we need to be open to the fact that there's no way for a rulebook to be completely universal. Thus, it sounds like this particular moderator is being close-minded. Based upon your posting, I'm assuming (and this is just an assumption, not based on empirical evidence!) that the moderator didn't want you to promote any money-related thing or anything that might make one think of profit. So, I would say it would seem safe to post in that forum as long as you don't bring up anything related to money or promoting a service. I'm not saying you did, but I wasn't/am not a part of the discussion that entailed. (Or rather, non-discussion, now that the moderator has decided to not respond; I think not responding is rude). I was banned from the Sony PS forums years ago - about 3 now. I don't remember exactly what it was for, but it was something ridiculous and definitely within normal posting behavior (I thought). I just can't remember what I had posted about.
![]() I joined here shortly after, and I've been here ever since. Not always a bad thing being banned. ![]() |

I received an infraction at AVS for answering a question back during the format war days.

I was a new member here and I answered a question someone posted about divx support on the PS3 when that was a new feature. I got an infraction from Wicky-Woo for talking about piracy even though I didn't I just spoke about playing divx on the PS3. I then asked what the infraction was for (politely) in a PM and not only did I not get a response I also got another infraction for the same thing.
Those 2 infractions are still attached to my name here which I think is total BS. |

All you had to say was "I received an infraction at AVS" and I knew exactly what it would be about, hahahah. I received plenty back in the day over there, such a 1 sided site (in favor of a now extinct format now ![]() |

Thanks for the response JW. Sorry the post has been deleted so I can't read what exactly I did say, but I doubt I would have been talking about downloading pirated films. There are many things available legally through torrents which are talked about in regards to tv and open source films, but yes I understand what it is mostly used for, and thats fine and have not said anything related since. What bothered me was the 2 infractions for 1 instance without explaination.
