Default isn't new line owned by warner? if so i have a thought

new line is mad about no region coding on hd dvd right so what if they give hd dvd until the end of the year to figure it out and if they dont they go blu-ray only. just a thought. i heard new line was mad about it so i dont know.

I wondered about this too. It seems too easy to me, but I guess that's why I'm not an exec at warner. Region coding, better sales, better potential--easy choice--Blu all the way.

New Line used to be owned by Warner when Warner was owned by AOL. I think..

I didn't read that anyone was mad. NewLine is releasing Hairspray on BD in the US because it is no longer in theaters in the US but it is still on theaters in Europe. This results in a delayed release for HD DVD because there aren't region restrictions. It'll probably be released in Europe on BD and HD DVD and on HD DVD in the US on the same date.

It's good business.

Pretty sure New Line is still owned by Warner (judging from the WB marketing of Lord of the Rings)--
Warner got New Line included in the Turner-merger package deal, back when Ted had originally bought the then struggling-indie New Line just to make them show "Gettysburg" in theaters.

(Not making this up.)

New line belongs to Warner bros. since day that studio came into existance. they are a what some would call a dependent studio. and its budget isn't as high as warner, which is why they are under warner bros.

New Line, Warner Bros. and HBO are all owned by Time Warner.

I think all three are going to go Blu-ray exclusive after the holidays when their Blu-ray releases continue to dominate their HD DVD releases in sales.

Remeber 60-70% of Warner's HD revenue is from Blu-ray Disc and that's with 25 less titles on the market, the majority of which are Warner's biggest selling HD DVD titles.

I think Warner had a contract with the HD DVD group to release a certain number of films only on HD DVD and a certain portion of them had to be big movies. Now that contract is almost up - perhaps it ends after October? That would be 18 months of HD DVD's lifetime.

In 1994, New Line Cinema was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System, which then merged with Time Warner in 1996.

"Stolen" from Wikipedia.

No they werent.

New Line existed as its own company for almost 30 years until Turner bought in 94' it after the success of The Nightmare on Elm Street and Ninja Turtles Series. They were an independent exploitation film studio with mostly horror movies and some low budget action stuff kinda like what Anchor Bay is today.

New Line is owned by Time Warner but operates as an independent company. Although Time Warner does have veto power if something controversial were to happen. Its the same type of relationship Miramax & Disney used to share before the Weinsteins left.

Just quoted to say thanks for someone else explaining the New Line situation correctly. To put it simply, New Line and Warner Brothers are both owned by Time Warner, but New Line is an independent studio from Warner Brothers, not a subsidiary of it.

Also, unlike larger studios such as Warner Brothers, most of New Line's films have a variety of international distributors which release films at different times. This is a huge problem for smaller studios like New Line when it comes to HD DVD. It is unfair to international distributors to release a film on HD DVD in the U.S. without region coding, when the film is still in theatres in many places. Many people would rather pay to import the film rather than pay to see a movie in theatres and then buy the disc later, costing the international distributor two sales. Hence their decision, which is sending the HD DVD fanboys into a fit.

Actually I read for N. America Bluray gets Hairspray now and hd-dvd in '08. If New Line is really testing the waters, I wish they would've released a title with a little more appeal. Give me Austin Powers, The Rush Hours, or The Blade Trilogy for example. As great as it is to see their first title on blu, it's just one I have to pass on.
