Warner Bros. is desperate for their next big franchise now that Harry Potter is ending.....This really irks me. They should just leave the original alone. It's perfect the way it is. The next thing we know they will remake Gone With the Wind and Casablanca They have hundreds of different comic characters at their disposal, or maybe they could get fresh talent into the studio to make ORIGINAL movies. Just a thought. It's just one of those things, and I'm not happy about it. And I love Robert Zemeckis, but I can't support this.

End rant.

Wizard Of Oz is a classic and shouldn't be touched at all. Classics aren't suppose to be. What's next Gone With The Wind and The Sound of Music? Are they just running out of scripts to write or ideas? That's sad. No originality whatsoever.

Leave The Classics Alone!

I'm not sure I see the downside here.

Sure, it might suck but whether it's good or bad it can't diminish the original.

And let's be honest, it's not like the money being spent on this is coming from some top-secret 'Incredibly Fresh and Exciting Projects' account.

The worst this can do is push 'Inception II - This Time With Even More CGI AND That Kid From Kick-Ass!' back a few months.

And there's an outside chance it might even be fun.

I don't see much of a problem, the 1939 is about as close to the source material as our Earth is to the Andromeda galaxy

Beside what does it matter they make a new movie, it's not like the original will be gone, it's still there for all of us to watch.

Some things should be left alone... this is one of them. Bad idea. Return To Oz never found it's audience because despite being closer to the book, there was nothing adults really liked about it in terms of light whimsy and kids didn't like it because it was too scary. I liked RTO but most didn't until it hit DVD, then it had a bit of a cult following. WOZ needs to be left untouched!

I for one don't mind it.
Your arguments that classics should be left alone are wrong. Does it mean that we shouldnt make remakes not to diminish the effectivness of their predesessors? Why?

That said, I hate sequels because I like new movies more, but remakes to very old movies are good thinks if done right, because they bring life to eally great stories, and better visual boost along the way isnt a bad thing too.

The Original is a masterpiece, of that there is no doubt(i dont have many BD but this is one of them) but i think if Zemeckis is on board with this Im damn well up for it.

remakes of classics like Oz just encourage people to not get off their butt and watch the originals. it is just appeasing a younger generation that is telling studios "let's make a deal: you guys don't have to be original ever again, and in exchange we commit to give you our hard earned dollars because we'll never have to look at old films!!"

why encourage bad behavior, and at the same time produce inferior work product? oh wait, they're giving you their hard earned $$, nevermind

Or maybe the originals are terrible, like the case is here? Sci-Fi's original movie "Tin Man" is better than the original Oz.

everytime i see the term "remake" it's a reminder that all of the so called creative minds are either out of original thoughts and ideas (or can't pitch those original ideas well enough to studios who will back them with the money) or they are lazy and think the public will keep paying to see the same things remade over and over again.
if they can't get the big studios to back their original ideas go indie but how bout getting something new and fresh out there. it's as bad as everytime i listen to the radio it's a f'n remake of a remake of an original song from years ago.

i'm just saying...

exactly -- thats the other reason: you can only produce X number of movies each year. for every remake that gets made, that is one less original movie the public gets to enjoy. sad. so sad.

History always repeats itself, I was hurt when they remade Karate Kid but none of the young kids I asked new anything of the original Karate kid or wax on wax off or who Mr Miagi was. I love to watch the W.O.Z with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon no one believes it till they sit down and watch it with me then they all walk away believers.

If they wanted to go back to the books and try to start a franchise of movies based on the books, I would be all for this...and there is plenty of material for this approach. Simply redoing exactly what's been done before makes absolutely no sense, however.

Back in 1985, Disney made "Return to Oz" starring Fairuza Balk as Dorothy. While it wasn't a retelling of the original story, it did attempt to have the characters look like the original book's drawings and Balk was closer in age to the book's Dorothy than the MGM movie. (Shirley Temple was originally wanted to play Dorothy in the 1939 version.)

While I understand how people don't think "The Wizard of Oz" should be remade because it's such a classic, the 1939 version was also a remake. "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was made in 1910, "The New Wizard of Oz" was made in 1914 and there was a 1925 version starring a 19-year-old Dorothy Dwan (Dorothy Illgenfritz) in which (according to IMDB):

Quote:
"A Toymaker tells a bizarre story about how the Land of Oz was ruled by Prince Kynd, but he was overthrown by Prime Minister Kruel. Dorothy learns from Aunt Em that fat, cruel Uncle Henry is not her uncle, and gives her a note due on her eighteenth birthday, which reveals she is actually Princess Dorothea of Oz, and is supposed to marry Prince Kynd. She, Uncle Henry , and two farmhands are swept to Oz by a tornado. Snowball, a black farmhand soon joins them after a lightning bolt chases him into the sky. They land in Oz, where the farmhands try to avoid capture. Semon becomes a scarecrow, Hardy briefly disguises himself as a Tin Woodman, and Snowball is given a Lion suit by the Wizard, which he uses to scare the Pumperdink guards."
So if you don't believe in remakes, there wouldn't have been the 1939 version. Having said that, I don't think a remake should be made from the same script as the 1939 version and I also don't think any remake should be a musical. If they're going to redo it, they should either go back to the source material or make a non-musical version of "Wicked", which turns the story of the Wicked Witch into an allegory on race, revolution, and politics. And even though I don't like 3D much, this is one movie that could work quite well as a 3D animated (not live-action) film, although there have also been animated versions in the past.

Also, Disney is supposedly working on a "Wizard of Oz" prequel.

i agree, it's true, most folks have no idea that they are watching remakes. I also find the irony incredibly funny that given the avatar you use, in your post is the great movie line: "wax on, wax off" this really tickled the $hit outta me!

but like you said, most folks won't get it and won't be able to associate it with the original movie that it came from!
