Default Thinking of making the leap into projectors (for cheep)

Hey guys.
After the whole 3d tv disaster (couldent find a 3d set that dident have some major distracting issue with it, burn in, flashlighting, etc..) i got a new samsung tv, with major light leakage issues on its entire right side, so i traded it with my dad, who is not one bit bothered by it for his old sony 40 inch which is a great lcd, but i want somthing bigger and better.

Thinking of for my small bedroom, Projectors since i dont see how they have any of the issues like lcds with backlight leakage and flashlighting, and plasmas, with burn in issues. Yes, i know at some point your going to have to change the bulb but thats really the main issue im reading about.

So whats the low down and more importantly, where can i get a good one for cheep?

Few Questions.
No flashlighting or burn in right with a projector?
How noisy are they?
Do you really need a screen for them or is a grey wall good enough?
Does 1080p vs 720p really matter when the image is 100 inches?

I can live with 720 p for a projector. This is my first one and i dont expect it to be the top of the line model. Also its just for a 10x11 bedroom with just one window and since im an insominac i do most of my movie watching at night anyhow.

Any sujestions? I dont want to spend over 500 dollars if i can. I looked on bestbuy.com and amazon but i know jack shit about these things, i dont want to get rooked cause 500 bucks is a months worth of petty cash for me!

thanks guys

No projectors wont have light leakage or flashlighting

People are going to tell you that 1080p vs 720p on a projector with 100" screen is absolutley noticeable.. But i will tell you these are the same people that "say" they can see the difference with 1080p vs 720p on a 40" tv .. I have owned proejctors for the past 8 years, and by no means am i an expert but I do not see any noticeable difference with 1080p vs 720p projectors.

A screen is better but a wall is fine too and if your not a home theatre analist (as i call them)you probably won't notice the difference. But i would at the very least paint the wall white.

I currently have the Optoma HD65 720p projector and its great, i am going to sell it to upgrade to the HD66 which is 3D ready. So for you I would suggest the Optoma HD66 since it has all the great picture quality of the HD65 with the added 2500 lumiens brightness and its 3D ready (need to buy an adapter later or use a PC)

good luck and welcome to the world of watching movies and playing games on 100" + screens ... once you go projector you never go back

I have a moviemate 72 which is 720p. I have it hooked to a Sony Blu Ray player. Im throwing about 100 - 120 depending on my moods. The other night I was sitting about 10 feet away and no issues at all with telling difference between 1080 and 720! Normally I sit 14 feet away.

Its an all in one and during the summer I bring it outside for backyard movienights. It does avery good job of upconverting almost as good as the Sony BluRay.. Its an LCD and I have ZERO screen door effect with blus and virtually unnoticable when its upconverting!

I have the Optoma HD20 ($999) which is great (I use it on a slightly off white wall). 12ft viewing a 100 inch wall. Check out my theater for some pics of it and some screenshots.

I bought a 1080 Sanyo about a 18 months ago ($1,400 online then). I had looked a couple of years before at projectors and I noticed a big difference between 1080 and 720, which I don't really when looking at HD and SD on our 55 inch LCD.

I had the projector showing on a flat white painted wall for about 6 months. I ended up painting a 120 inch screen goo white screen on the wall. I noticed a significant difference, although it looked pretty good on the plain white wall, better on the goo. I also painted the wall around the screen black, including 3 feet out on the ceiling and side walls, then gray and wine colored back to the projector on the walls and ceiling. I had lot of reflection off the white walls before the painting. Drove me nuts, but my wife thinks I just made it up. Also put up blackout curtains and black blinds.

My rambling point is you could get the pj (personally I would vote for the 1080, but try and go someplace where they will hook up a couple for a demonstration so you can see the difference, or non difference). Then you can add a screen and other changes later if you think it will matter to you.

Just to let you know I ordered the HD66 and it will not work with stand alone blu ray players. Optoma doesnt make any that I know of that will work with them. They work with computers. Heard they are coming out with an adapter in January that is 499.

you can most definitely tell the difference between 1080p and 720p projectors, i know for certain cuz i have both. 1080p is just way sharper WHEN the source material is way sharper. for stuff shot on film that is not razor sharp, it will actually be very close, not solely because of the resolution but because the 3d 720p projectors are DLP and the contrasts and colors are WAY better than LCD projectors even if they're 1080p, so you see image details that get washed out on LCD ones (not to forget the DLPS are super bright too). and since the optoma 3d adapter is limited to 720p i don't think you'll be missing much at that resolution (this is also the setup i'm going for). a 1080p dlp 3d projector would be the best but there aren't any yet (or at a reasonable price i mean)

I guess I'm about to pull the trigger at this optoma hd66. BUT ... is it true you have to get and adapter to benefit from the 3D? I mean I got interested one I saw it advertised on amazon as compatible with wii,and playstation, which I would be using to enjoy the 3D option. if this DLP projector doesn't work with the ps3 then i'll have to pass on it.

Its only compatible with computers or video games. That adapter that is coming out in January will probly make it work with blu ray players but its gonna cost 499. I hear LG has full HD projectors that will play 3d now for less than 900. I just found out about them today BX 277 and 327.

SO you're saying that it won't even work with the ps3 right? Shame I was looking forward to seeing 3D games and videos using my ps3 with the new added 3D functionality. Is there any projector out there that can be used with the ps3 and take advantage of the 3D feature?

If the sitting distance for me is 6 feet, is that gonna be like my own Imax theater? Does the projection get pixilated sitting that close?
