Canada My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

I am in Montreal at the moment and I was surprised to see a blu ray release of this at the HMV. It had a french cover (reversable?) but according to the back, it does contain English audio. I was surprised that the film didn't get a US BD release... strange that Canada (and possibly just Quebec) is getting one!

Here's the link on this site:

I'd be very curious to hear details about this if anyone picks it up. I was planning on importing this from Germany in November, but a Canadian release would be much easier.

I'll pick up tomorrow if I finish work early enough. Will post on here within a week re: my opinions of the disc.

Cheers!

Thanks for the link. I love Herzog's films, but never got around seeing this. I just wish more of his films are out on blu ray

Okay, picked it up will give the details according to the case. Not able to actually view it for the next few days as I am away from home.

It IS a reversible French/English cover.

1:85:1 Aspect Ratio

English Subtitles

French and English sound options (5.1 HD Dolby Surround)

Bonus features: Plastic Bag (short film narrated by Herzog)
Herzog commentary
Trailers
Behind The scenes

Released by VVS Films

Once again, this is just going from the box, but sounds promising.

I can't find any online store that stocks this - even Amazon.ca says "2 to 4 weeks" (aka they don't have any stock yet). Anyone wanna pick one up and mail it to me? lol

Are you not in Canada? HMV has it for $24.99 (no online ordering).

Yeah I'm not in Canada, I'm in the US. HMV in the UK does online ordering, but HMV.ca apparently does not.

In that case you're probably better off placing the order on Amazon and waiting the 2 weeks for them to ship it out. The minimum shipping charge for someone to send it in a padded envelope would be $4.73 unless it's under 100g. Couple that with GST (and additional taxes if someone outside of Alberta offered to pick it up) and you're looking at $30.97 minimum... Plus the USD is not very strong at the moment.

Okay, just took a quick look at it. It is 1:85 as advertised and does have English Audio (and menus). The picture quality is strange. I think the film was shot on HD, giving it that harsher sharper quality which at times looks incredible on this disc. Strangely though, there are some moments of really poor compression and artifacting. Not on the image on screen as a whole, but if you look at the blues on the garage door for example, they sometimes show huge signs of artifacts. These moments seem small though, generally speaking it looks great in my opinion.

A quick follow up, the colour BLUE seems to be the real problem here when it comes to the artifacting. You'll see it on the opening shot and cringe. Really bad. Strangely other moments and elements are fantastic. I should also mention that audio seems fine but I don't have a set up to properly judge it.

$28.99 plus shipping if you really can't wait

Usually ships the same day if ordered before 3pm.

On a whim, I rechecked Amazon.ca and it said "1 in stock (more soon on the way)" so I ordered it. The status has now gone back to "Ships in 2 to 4 weeks" and my order is "Shipping Soon" so I guess I got the last one? I can't imagine how few of these they must have gotten... there's very weird distribution for these Canadian-exclusive titles.

Anyway, looking forward to it hopefully shipping and getting over here quick for me to check out!

Question

Is "Plastic Bag" in 1080P?!
And is "Behind the Madness - The Making of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" (a great featurette which is on the German BD) also included?

Then I would have to buy the film a second time (I have already the very good German BD release).

The German BD has the exact same problems.

Without knowing it I guess the Italian BD will also have this issues...

Man, bummer. So with that revelation it seems the German BD really has nothing to offer over the Canadian. Which is easier on my wallet, at least.

I got my Canadian BD.

The German one has a nicer artwork (even the disc itself looks better) and a nicer menu.

Other than that they are equally quality-wise (even the same audio commentary and same Behind the Scenes featurette) but the Canadian has "Plastic Bag".

Also the Canadian disc is at least Region A+B if not codefree.
My Region B Player played the disc without any problem.
