Uwe Boll's theatrically-released, $20,000,000+ movies - Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale - all play by an interesting set of rules. Namely:
-The film shall be visually stylish -There shall be many visual effects of varying quality -There shall be intermittent fight scenes involving large groups of people -There shall be a storyline involving someone becoming aware of their important role in a grand supernatural conflict -Said storyline shall feel rushed, muddled, and somewhat incomplete -There shall be some well-respected cast members (and being in this film shall lose them some of said respect) -As soon as someone opens their mouth, poor dialogue writing and acting shall bring the movie down dozens of notches Lately, however, Uwe Boll has moved on to lower-key (and believe it or not, much better) productions with some sort of social relevance, such as 1968 Tunnel Rats, Rampage, and Attack on Darfur. M. Night seems to have stepped in and adopted Uwe's playbook. In case you haven't guessed yet, I just watched The Last Airbender, and I really felt like I was watching a 2005-era Boll film. I understand that it's an adaptation of a cartoon, but really now... take a look at that list again. Every single bullet applies to this film. There were even specific moments that made me think back to scenes from Uwe's movies; the scenes between the Fire Lord and Admiral Zhao (sp?) especially seemed incredibly reminiscent of the scenes between Lord Kagan and Domastir from BloodRayne in acting, staging, and dialogue (more precisely, they sucked in the same specific manner). Has anyone else noticed this? |
