I'm so sick of portable DVD players with pathetic resolutions of 800x480 that as soon as you get to within 1 foot of the player you see pixels, grain & un-defined images.
![]() I hate having to sit at least 4 feet from the player just to see a halfway clear image. It's not so much about the size of the screen as it is the QUALITY of the image we see within that screen. We desire ultra-clear, ultra-defined images on smaller screens just as much as we do on large ones. BOTTOM LINE: The current lot of portable DVD player LCD screens are pathetic when compared to the QUALITY images we see on our monitors, laptops & TVs & I see no reason for that. SONY should make a chrome/metallic blue colored portable DVD/BD player A.S.A.P. with a slot-load drive & a 10 inch screen with a LCD (or OLED?) resolution of AT LEAST 1600x1200 OR as close to 1920x1200 as possible. That way people can watch content on a smaller screen that looks just as good as the image they see on their bigger screens. IMHO, there is not only NO point in an 8" HD screen, there is also no point in having this on laptops either, which Toshiba seems to think will be HD-DVD's saviour.

OS X Leopard is set to introduce resolution independence. BD is likely to be introduced in a next generation of Macbooks Pro.

Perhaps the portable BD player wont have exactly 1920x1200 resolution, BUT at least it will give you the same if not better images you get on your laptop, HDTV, or HD monitor.
BOTTOM LINE: The current lot of PDP's suck serious a** when compared to the images we see on our laptops & TVs & I see no reason for that. We desire ultra-clear, ultra-defined images on small screen just as much as we do on large ones. |

I am not buying DVD's anymore so on trips my kids are not able to watch any of the movies that have come out recently because they are on Blu-ray.

A portable BD player should have a LCD (or maybee OLED?) screen with a built in resolution of AT LEAST 1600×1200. |

It'd be better for a portable DVD manufacturer to put a quality 640x480 LCD into the system than put a higher resolution LCD and go HD. 1:1 pixel, high contrast, and quick response would go a lot further than HD resolution.

They've already made portable DVD players with 800x480 screens & they're STILL good enough when you compare them to a laptop or monitors image.
It's time they go BEYOND. |

Well, let's look at the technical issues here. blu-ray players are still HUGE. High def screens of that size will be EXPENSIVE if not mass produced. LCD is a dated technology at best. Oled is the way to go, but is anyone geared up to produce such a screen up to our demanding standards? Last and certainly not least is battery power. Even with the wonderful lithium-ion batteries, is there enough juice to last more than a 2 hour movie? Blu-ray takes power. Took a number of years to see DVD shrink into portable players, will be the same for blu-ray. A lot of the support components still have not been shrunk down to smaller and fewer chips. Those advances is what makes technology more affordable and smaller. You want it now anyways? Ok, hope you are near an outlet, or auto cigarette lighter. Might be the only way you get to use it. I want one too! But I'll have to be patient and not act like Richie Rich, the poor little rich kid. |

Even from 8" away, on a 17" LCD, 1920x1200 movies would be pointless, so portables and laptops would be of interest only if it has hdmi output for a bigger TV.
I seriously doubt a lot of people would want to watch any highdef movies on a laptop in a plane, unless you just want to show off your newest gadget. |

The future is going to be some kind of digital media player that docks into the car system, possibly with a managed copy version off the Blu disc.
Not a mechanical system that takes a lot of power and is prone to bumps in the road. Blu has much lower tolerances for such things |

I own a 10.2 inch PDP that has a 800x480 res.
From 2 feet away, sitting on a couch it looks GREAT. BUT if you set it in your lap or on a desk you DON'T end up seeing a CLEAR fluid image you end up seeing what I like to call "a bunch of moving pixels." I want to be able to get close to the screen & still see a ultra-clear iamge. |

I own PHILIPS' newest model the PET1030 & as soon as I get comfortably close to the screen (on my lap for example) the image becomes horribly un-clear & crappy looking.
Even if someone made one with a res. of 1280×800 it would be a big improvement. Last edited by Invincible_Ninja; 12-13-2007 at 03:33 AM. |
