TOKYO, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) video game console Wii outsold Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation 3 by a ratio of three to one in Japan in August, but Nintendo's overwhelming lead in the market narrowed for the second consecutive month.

Nintendo sold 245,653 units of the Wii in the four weeks ending Aug. 26, compared with 81,541 units of Sony's PS3, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said. The ratio was more than four to one in favour of the Wii in July and six to one in June.

Sony's PS3, packed with cutting-edge technology such as a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player, has been trailing the Wii in sales since the consoles were introduced late last year, due to the PS3's high price and a scarcity of strong game titles.

But the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate plans to launch a wide range of new games towards the critical year-end shopping season, including the latest installment of its popular in-house racing game "Gran Turismo".

"Gran Turismo 5", one of the most eagerly awaited titles for the PS3, is set to go on sale in October, in a bid to ignite PS3 demand among devoted game fans.

Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research), locked in battle with Nintendo and Sony over dominance in the $30 billion global video game industry, sold 11,288 units of its Xbox 360 in August, Enterbrain said.

Shares in Sony closed up 0.4 percent at 5,600 yen, while Nintendo fell 1.7 percent to 52,800 yen. The Nikkei average <.N225> was down 0.27 percent.

whats funny is the Wii and the Playstation 3 are doing good in all regions..but yet the PRO-XBOX360 fans tend to think the playstation 3 is not selling that the xbox360 is out selling the Playstation 3...THAT MAY BE TRUE FOR THE US but not the rest of the world. the INSTALL BASE for the playstation 3 is growing. and Number's are going to continue to grow.

the mere fact that the Wii is so much cheaper and even still the playstation 3 is sell very well shows that the playstation 3 is going to do very well. and when the price drops even further its going to do even better.combined with the Blu-Ray functionality of MOVIE playback capability of the Playstation 3. which has proven without a shadow of a doubt that puts the playstation 3 as one of the best Blu-Ray movie players out on the market. its Value is VERY WELL WORTH THE MONEY. and aside from useing the playstation 3 as a Linux PC also

Happy to see someone that thinks that sony is doing well. The ps3 is worth its weight in gold, no question about that.

Hot Shots 5 gave the PS3 a little boost that seems to be holding somewhat.

The problem is when this effect wears off the PS3 may be back down to sub-10k sales.

PS3 needs titles like FF13, MGS4, GT5, a PS3 Monster Hunter game and more Gundam games

Still, the PlayStation platform as a whole is rocking the shit. The PS2, PSP, PS3 combo is def. generating sales.

Hot Shots golf is one of the favorite series in Japan.

That title alone may continue to sell PS3s in Japan at its current rate.

It's the US that needs the PS3 to start getting some "real" titles.

Warhawk and Heavenly Sword are good titles, but neither will be a system seller.

Lair might have been a system seller if it wasn't getting trashed via reviews...I've seen a lot of people just gawking at a Lair setup in stores.

A very large percentage of US PS3 owners right now either bought it for its potential games, or for it's "others" beyond games.

I have very little doubt that Uncharted, Haze, and Ratchet and Clank will be at least decent games, however again, these are not really system sellers.

Gran Turismo might be the only real system seller coming out this year, considering Gran Turismo 3 was the 3rd best selling PS2 game.

This holiday season will be very interesting for the PS3.

On a side note, I find it extremely interesting that a lot of web sites which loved to post the Japan numbers of '18K PS3s' are strangely devoid of the 80K+ number from this month. I wonder why?

Hate to disagree with you on a few things. Why do you think that warhawk and heavenly sword won't do well? With Gran Turismo on the way, could you add GTA IV to the list? We know for a fact that this holiday season, there won't be a shortage of ps3's in stores like there was last year. I'm hoping that we get a new firmware update by the holiday times, or a controller with rumble so that sony fans will quit complaing about the lack of rumble, a newer model of the ps3 or something else that I didn't mention already.

I didn't say they won't do well. I said they won't be system sellers. Go up to a random un-informed person on the street and ask them about Heavenly Sword. You'll just get a blank stare. Everyone knows Mario. Everyone knows Halo. Heck, everyone knows Gran Turismo. Warhawk? Heavenly sword? Not so much.

When I say it won't be a system seller, I'm not using it to claim zero sales based on the title. I'm saying it won't move millions of consoles.

I calculate the total units sold a month in the time frame the PS3 is out...

going by nexgenwars numbers...

it comes to roughly 488,888 a month worldwide

the 360 comes to 537,619 units sold a month

the difference isn't TOO drastic

although the Wii is still blowing everyone away at a whopping 1,166,666 mil sold a month

you cannot go by VGA chartz and nextgenwars numbers and expect them to be any where close to accurate . Why because they do not have world wide number's they may say they do but they do not how do i know this ..because ONLY Sony has world wide install base sales number's and even still their numbers are off on the sale through of systems AT A RETAIL CHAIN WORLD WIDE LEVEL ,that have sold through retail outlets. you do know the playstation 3 is being sold to (64 countries world wide) the current install base of systems sold through by Sony'S PUBLIC SALE THROUGH THEIR RETAIL CHAIN. THE CURRENT INSTALL BASE OF PLAYSTATION 3'S ARE (6) MILLION THAT WAS AS OF july POST AU PLAYSTATION EVENT
