Default Help me choose a receiver

I recently bought all new speakers and want a new 5.1 receiver to go with them, I want at least 2 zones (preferably 3) so I can use it in a second room, and maybe in the future a third room. I don't care for wireless or anything, thank you.

my speakers

center
Polk Audio CS10 Center Channel Speaker

towers
Polk Audio Monitor 70 BLACK Towers

satellites
Polk Audio OWM3 On-Wall Speaker

sub
Polk Audio PSW110 subwoofer

The Yamaha RX-V3900 was the top of the line RX-V receiver before they intorduced their Aventage series. It used to sell for $1,900. You can buy this factory refurbished receiver for $699 plus free shipping:

how do you think this compares with the Pioneer receivers like the VSX-33.

I think you would find it a better receiver, as stated it was the top of the line receiver and that is an entry level Elite. The Yamaha 1900, 2900, and 3900 were all really nice recievers.

The only advantage the Pioneer VSX-33 has is HDMI 1.4 and the ability to process 3D. The VSX-33 is not even the top Pioneer receiver. Overall, the Yamaha is a much better receiver as far as audio is concerned. It was the top-of-the-line RX-V receiver from Yamaha and used to compete very well with the previous generation of Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, and Sony ES receivers.

If you don't care for 3D, then Yamaha 3900 is a higher end receiver.

I was going to throw in the Onkyo TX-NR3007, but accessories4less just upped the price up the $899. It was $750 like a week or so ago. It is an amazing receiver itself as it retailed around the same price as the Yamaha suggested. For the price of that Yamaha I would jump all over it unless you prefer other brands. And unless you "NEED" hdmi 1.4 then you can get amazing deals on older models as already suggested. Both the Yamaha and this Onkyo would destroy the Pioneer vsx-33 in everything other than a few 2010 features like hdmi 1.4

I agree with the posters above; the Yamaha RX-V3900 is an excellent receiver, and at the price right now a fantastic bargain!

Also, the Onkyo TX-NR3007 is another fantastic receiver, and was selling for an amazing price as well ($799.99), but it went up a bit in the last few days.

Anyway, can't go wrong with either one!

TIP: Wait about two weeks, and I bet you'll see them for about $600 or so.

I can vouch that the Pioneer will do you no good in the long run.

I can vouch for the Yamaha being a great receiver. Had an old RX-V459 for about 7 years and never any issuse with it. Just upgraded to the RX-A2000 (got a good deal at a local store $300 off list) and I am awed by the sound that I get from the Yamaha. If you can streach your budget look to RX-A series. It's more like a high end computer than a receiver. Almost everything is changable from the inputs to the sound programs. Still on a learning curve with this one.

I don't have an 3D tv so I have no need for HDMI 1.4, I am considering the Yamaha RX-V39000, is worth the extra $80?

Here's my take. If you are trying to keep costs down the VSX-33 is a good all around receiver for the money. I'm looking at it myself since I have a buyer lined up for my 1020. If you don't have need for dual HDMI outputs you can further cut costs by going with the VSX-1120 instead. Its the exact same receiver minus the second HDMI output, the aluminum faceplate, and 12v triggers. Centraldigital.com has it for $485 shipped. They also have the VSX-33 for $615 shipped by the way, but definitely consider the 1120 if you don't need the dual outputs. Its a heck of a deal. If you want to have the latest features and a boatload of power then you should consider bumping up your budget for the Onkyo 1008 which is $800 shipped on Amazon right now.

Keep in mind that this year's Onkyo and Pioneer receivers have improved sound quality over last year's already good sound. This has been pointed out in several reviews of the Onkyo receivers in particular. They have refined the sound quite a bit. This is also something that should be factored in before considering last year's receivers. If you can care less about the latest features then the Yamaha RX-V3900 is definitely worth a look at. Its a topnotch high end receiver that's very hard to beat. There are few receivers available for under a grand that match up, and none that I can think of at that price. I should make special mention of the Adcom GFR-700HD for $800 on Amazon right now. Its not the most feature rich receiver, but its power, sound quality, and build quality are superb.
