United Kingdom Play.com odd behaviour information

By chance I was checking my purchase history on Play this morning and noticed I had three items that were showing as ordered and refunded today before I logged on!

The three DVDs were ones I'd purchased from PlayUSA (they were all Region 1) some 8-9 years ago so I had no idea what was happening. I called them up concerned someone was 'checking out' if my account had been hacked but apparently it's nothing to worry about and in fact it's good news and has happened to quite a few people today.

The explanation is that (for some reason, presumably connected with PlayUSA no longer being in business and the back records being closed down/checked) they are comparing the price I paid with more recent/better prices and refunding the difference if it has been cheaper... presumably either at present or maybe even any time in the last 9 years!

I have no idea why but I would guess some obscure law concerning the closure of a sub-company... any better guesses or knowledge is welcome!

So check your Play back history and see if some of those R1 imports from years gone by have been partially refunded... I got £18 back on my three and I wonder if there are more to come

The refund goes to your present credit card registered with them, not the card you may have paid with many years ago so that's not anything to worry about either.

How bizarre!

I've just checked and can see £3 has been refunded from an old 'Galaxy Quest' R1 DVD I bought back in 2000!

I can't say I object to anyone putting money back into my account, so will keep an eye on things to see if any others get randomly refunded.

Happy to oblige; that was really the main point in posting as people seeing the items in their history could (and probably should!) worry, as I did, and even good things on statements can be 'concerning' if you don't know where they're from...

That's strange!

I've purchased alot form PLAYUSA & no orders are showing up, let alone refunds

I've purchased Bourne Trilogy, Austin Powers Collection, Galaxy High School, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season 1-6, Defenders of the Earth Volumes 1 & 2 amongst others....and nothing!

My two seemingly random refunds are Insomnia Criterion £5 and Force 10 from Navarone £2.

Hmm, seems like they may have realised their little 'error'... now showing up as Cancelled instead of Refunded.

Saw a guess elsewhere that they may have tried to combine the old PlayUSA database with the main one and it automatically kicked off the price comparison checker in error, which to me sounds very believable. Just have to wait and see if they actually do go through as refunds or whether they stopped the payment to the card before it went.

I received the following e-mail from play.com now:

Quote:
We are aware that this morning you may have received an email from us advising that a refund would be processed as part of our Pre-order Price Promise. A technical issue within our system resulted in a number of old orders being incorrectly identified as being eligible for a refund. As a result a refund was initially generated on your account and an email sent out to you.

Due to this error we have arranged for this refund to be cancelled and your account history updated to reflect this change. Please note that you do not need to take any further action regarding this issue. No monies will be debited or credited to your account.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused in this matter and we would like to thank you for shopping with Play.com

Kind Regards

Play.com
