My older Panasonic DMP-BD55 BD player doesn't want to cooperate no more!
![]() It doesn't load those BD titles at all: 1. "Igor" 2. "Milk" 3. "Righteous Kill" 4. "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" 5. "Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day" * All from Alliance. The unit display says No Read. ...And all my discs are totally clean and scratch-free! (I even reclean them to make sure). I even did a Reset. But many of my other BD titles don't have any problem! Could it be those discs from Alliance are bad? ...And several other BD titles take much more time to load, and some break into pixelization! ![]() So the Picture is totally wasted, and the Audio lost into the labyrinth of inertia! ![]() Was wondering if other people also experienced that? _________________________________ Anywho, my guess is that the laser assembly is now out of focus and that makes this BD player CAPUT! ![]() ![]() ![]() Nothing last forever! So, I decided to try another brand; a Sony BDP-S570 for only $169.99 Canadian dollars (plus taxes) from Future Shop. ![]() I hate Sony (the company and their bad business tactics); and I tought I would never buy another Sony product. But here it is now! ![]() We'll see how long that one will last... => Anyway, if someone has any info about why my Panny BD55 finally gave up on me, perhaps it can be resuscitated. ...And by the way, it has the latest firmware update (version 2.2). Merry Holidays! ![]() Bob Last edited by LordoftheRings; 12-27-2010 at 08:37 AM. Reason: title |

LordoftheRings I hope your new BD player lasts a very long time!
"IF" something happens to it which I hope doesn't happen then you should really get the most reliable players which tend to be the Oppo's or PS3. You probably know there isn't any other bd player on the market that gets as much punishment and abuse as a PS3, people game on them all day and watch bd's, very few problems with them and now it accepts 7.1 surround sound. Also, do you have it plugged into a surge eliminator? You should have all your electronics plugged into one, a SurgeX is best at protection. Last edited by oppopioneer; 12-27-2010 at 12:05 PM. |

![]() ![]() But my main reason was the fast loading! ![]() ![]() * And if Panny gave up on me after just two years or so; no way that I'll try them again. The same happened with Samsung before. ...So now was the time for me to give another chance to Sony, and put my principles aside for now. ![]() Quote:
![]() But I do have the Oppo BDP-83 in my main system. And I never game of my entire life, so the PS3 ain't for me. And no I don't use a power surge bar or power conditioner/purifier, and never did in over 40 years! Those Blu-ray players are build so light that any dust or little bump will put the laser out of working order. In my case the laser lens is perfectly clean as I always take good care of that, and the BD55 is still working with a lot of my Blu-rays, but it simply stop all together of playing a bunch of Alliance ones recently, and also shows some picture and sound breakups on some other discs! It is very hard to diagnose the problem, as I don't have the expertise to fix myself the laser assembly. I can do a lot of other things but not this one. * My best guess is this: 1. About a month ago or so we have a power cut that lasted 15 hours, and that might have affected the Panny. But all my other components are fine, so it would mean that the BD55 is built very flimsy with no internal protection; which ain't surprising at all if you open one and see that miniscule transformer! ![]() 2. All Blu-rays made by Allience Canada are from poor quality compared to other distributors, and as we all already know, they are one if not the worst distributor out there in the Blu-ray world with some very poor transfers in only 1080i in some of their titles, and also with only Dolby Surround, not even Dolby Digital! ![]() 3. The Panny had it! After playing perhaps 1,000 Blu-ray titles (maybe less I think), it simply reached the end of it's optimal performance; a natural cause of death! ![]() _______________________________ On to the Sony BDP-S570 now in my second system and we'll see how long (longetivity) this one will last. ![]() As for my Oppo 83, I might replace it with the newer BDP-95. ![]() But that is for another thread. Here I was mainly interested if other owners of the Panasonic DMP-BD55 had similar issues to mine. ...As in the last chance perhaps to try understand the cause of this. Because I already did everything that I know of: 1. Clean the disc. 2. Clean the laser lens. 3. Tried another HDMI cable. 4. Did a Reset. 5. Physically disconnect the AC power cord for few minutes. 6. Double check all my settings. So I know everything is fine because other BD discs play just fine, but only in the last month or more, some problems have appeared and they are getting worse each day! By the way, I never played a standard DVD as I don't watch them now for almost three years! Only and extremely rarely. Anyway, I did all I could and I even posted my issue right here. So if someone experience a similar issue as mine, at least we can share some common attractions! ![]() And thanks guys I really appreciate your replies and encouragement on my newer player. ![]() Bob Last edited by LordoftheRings; 12-27-2010 at 01:28 PM. The 370 boots up slow, but loads disc fast. Mine only boots slow because i don't use the quick on feature. That puts the player on stand by so the fan runs all the time.

I don't have much experience with alot of different players, but I know my BDP-S470 loads up alot faster than my Magnavox that was moved to my bedroom.
![]() BTW, thanks for making me look up the fact that my 470 is capable of playing SA-CDs. Woohoo! |

Agreed. I've only had my 370 for less than 24 hours, but I've loaded 3 movies since, and It's a lot faster than my Seiki and LG555C players. It was $99 @ Best Buy, so why not.... =)

Sorry to here that Bob! What can i tell ya Blu Ray players can be a royal pain in the ass!!! Load times, Burping and farting while trying to load, Constant firmware upgrades, Etc. I find them to be very finicky!! Why is the Blu Ray format so frustrating compared to the older DVD format?
5 in house Blu Ray players: Pioneer Elite, Sony, Samsung, Sony PS3 x 2 All with there issues and 2 replaced due to break downs! Panasonic A310 DVD player 14 years old and still runs flawlesly ![]() |

![]() I had tons of DVD players and HD DVD players and this is my fifth BD player and if I get the Oppo 95, make that six! Steve, I still have my Toshiba SD-3107 DVD player and it works just like brand new. Bought it in 1997. It even has an headphone jack (gold plated) with its own Volume level control that hides inside when pushed on. And all the jacks on the back are also gold plated. And two sets of Stereo analog outputs. Even Component Video outputs. I paid $800 Canadian back then; $900 with the taxes. Oh and the sound when playing CDs from its analog outs is great with its AKM DAC; very detailed and with great tight bass. Mind you, it's not like my Denon DVD-3930CI Universal DVD player, but it holds its own for its time. I truly believe that if you play enough regularly your BD player every week, it will die after couple years or three. Even some Denon Universal DVD players died on me just after couple years. It was their laser assemblies that were at fault! But then, nowadays there is no way you can keep a BD player for more than two or three years, as they constantly evolve. You gotta keep in touch with the latest technologies. And $200 is peanuts, pocket change money. So I'm good now with that. I don't expect too much. * I don't know why but some people don't believe me when I tell them that I never played any game of my entire life! I mean games from a screen, or even a computer. It just ain't my bag, as I played and still play music for over 40 years. And when I was in my teens and twenties, I was just so damn busy at working and make a living of my own. And back then life was totally different; there was no such thing as PS3 or XBox or even computers! ![]() My computer was a Royal typewriter. You know with those big round metal keys and oily metal legs. And it weighted a ton! The times they are a changin', that's fo sur. ![]() Last edited by LordoftheRings; 12-27-2010 at 06:04 PM.
