Default Final Fantasy IV

Am I the only one for whom this was their first FF? Still my favourite RPG of all-time, think I will always love it in spite of its simplistic story line and dated graphics.

It was also my first FF and is my favorite RPG of all time and my second favorite game of all time, behind A Link to the Past. I remember I was on a play through and left the game at a friends house, I was at Rubicant and my friend mess with the SNES and corrupted my save data. I was peeved, but I managed to get back pretty quickly. I also remember that Wall was a tougher battle than the final boss that was not long after it.

I wouldn't be completely adverse to another reboot of this but I guess the version on the DS will be as good as it gets. Just spotted a plothole, if we're the first ones to punch a hole in the Earth to get to the underground, how did the Red Wings get there first?

Yeah this was the best Cid, with VI's and VIII's right behind him. Oh and I don't think I'll ever like a summoner as much as I like Rydia, Yuna is close though.

It's funny that this thread just popped up, as I have never played a Final Fantasy game before and just bought this yesterday for my DS. Sounds like it was a good choice.

It's a good game through and through. While the DS does nice presentation, I think gameplay-wise I prefer the GBA port of Final Fantasy 4.

I'd probably get a portable gaming system if I traveled a lot more than I do, wishing they'd put a version of this on the Wii, that'd make me jump on one really quick.

Possibly. If they were to release it as a Super NES game, they'd have to insert either the GBA or PS1 translation onto the original (aka Hard) version of the game. Now that the harder/more complete version of the game has been released in America a couple times, they'd look pretty bad putting the '91 Final Fantasy 2 (based on the Easy version of FF4) up on the store.

Square Enix could also consider putting the PS1 version of FF4 on the PSN Store as a PS1 classic.

Meh I own Chronicles but as much as I love this game the graphics do bother me at times so a cheap higher bit rate version of it would be quite appealing to me. The treasure chest monsters on the moon and the amount of grinding you have to do in this game bother me a bit but otherwise it's quite flawless.

Just a heads up: I found that the DS remake had a a greater need for grinding than the original.

Gil is especially scarce so some tough calls have to be made on equipment, and there was also a time when I'd be
[Show spoiler]in combat with IceBeasts in the Tower of Zot and they'd do a heavy snow attack that could decimate my team in one shot, guarenteed kill us all in 2. And sometimes even concentrating every effort into killing them first wasn't good enough to save us.

Goodness and I thought they were hard after getting opposite elemental weapons to speed up the fights. I'll never look at 8 or 10 as hard again. Glad I don't have to face the Magus Sisters on that, I often forget which one to kill first and it just makes it harder to take out the rest.

A FFIV thread!

FFIV is my favorite game of all time (so therefore, also my favorite RPG and FF game). It wasn't my first RPG (I played the original FF and the NES Dragon Warrior games), but it is the one that stuck with me the longest. It was the first time that I had been involved in a game's story and characters, and I loved the interactions between the characters. I always liked Kain's arc, and I like Golbez 'the redeemed villian'. And also, whoever says Aeris was the first RPG character death is wrong Poor Tellah always gets forgotten

The story was simple, but it was well told and not a convulted mess later FF games would become. I liked the simple battle system, and it had some very memorable music (overworld, red wings, Rydia, etc...). However, I will agree that the amount of grinding involved was a bit much, but it was normal for RPGs at the time. We've just become spoiled

My favorite port is the Chronicles version as it is the most 'true' version of the game. The DS version is an excellent upgrade, but it caught me (a hardcore veteren of FFIV - I've played through the game over a dozen times and know pretty much every secret in the game!) completely off guard with it's difficulty. Bosses and enemies that were simple before were wiping my party out. It was worth it, however, to see my favorite characters and scenes in 3D graphics though Only wish that the Spoony Bard line were voice acted. I still have a soft spot for the old SNES version (FFII) as it was the one I first played (multiple times!), and I downloaded it on the Wii for nostalgia factor despite having the PSX and DS versions. Didn't care for the GBA port. Music and sound was poorly emulated, and the only redeeming factor was being able to switch your party out at the very end and seeing how powerful the other characters get at higher levels.

FFIV is an excellent game, and solidifies the SNES as my favorite system (along with FFVI. Chrono Trigger, Ogre Battle, LttP, and Super Metroid)!

I don't know, I like the final party. You have your two hammers in Kain and Cecil, your semi hammer with minimal magic abilities in Edge, your healer in Rosa and your wrath unleashed in Rydia. I think I actually like FF more when you can't customize your characters' abilities at a whim, takes away from the quality/difficulty of the game and also reduces the individuality of the characters, I think.

I agree. I like each character having their own niche in the party (which fits their personality). I don't as much care for the 'vanilla' characters that most FF games have. Characters need something to make them unique to the party, not just skins for the broken skill set you gave them.

I, too, like the final party. Very well balanced. The GBA port was just a curiosity as to how the other characters leveled up. I actually used the 'default' party my first time through that game because it was what I was comfortable with and was very balanced. I tried the other characters, but still think the 'default' party is the best (though Palom/Porom can make decent replacements for Rydia/Rosa should you desire)

Meh like Tellah said they were annoying runts, their best ability made them vulnerable while they were powering up. Still not sure how they pick their "Twin" attack or how much MP it uses. The only character you don't get to use in the final party that I may have liked is FuSoYa, I think he'd be a BIT more helpful than Edge who's kind of useless against Zeromus once you throw the Shurikens and the Spoon. LOL I wonder who thought that Spoon up.

I agree. Rydia really made this game for me. Here is the official DS artwork.

I do credit this one game for my interest in jRPGs, anime, Japan (ended up with a Japanese BA).

A picture from TGS 2008 when I was there...

Actually, I'm working on a Cecil cosplay right now to hopefully debut at FanimeCon 2011 in San Jose. (Yes, I enjoy cosplay - not going to lie).

I like how the final party is in the back, who's the blonde guy, Princess Edwardina? Yuna really does come close, especially since she stands so tall against the oppression of the government and she fights so hard for Tidus.

I got into the party customizing and extra material of the GBA port. And I thought the music sounded perfect; noticed little difference if any.

The standard team was an excellent one that covered all the bases well, but I will mention merits of other allies, particularly Yang and to a lesser extent Cid. Either Cid with the Thor's Hammer* or Yang with a God Hand* and a Thunder Claw, freaking MURDER those DeathMasks that normally take all day to kill. Little known fact: those Masks are Mechs. They have somewhat high Magic Resistance, but weapons with Electric qualities mutilate them.

*both are exclusive GBA items.

Cid was a bit flat as a character to me, at least in battles. Loved him as a story character and an airship repairman/engineer.
