Default 100K Contrast Ratio LCDs

I just saw the new Samsung 81F series LCD televisions with 100,000:1 contrast ratio in my local Bestbuy.

That is the dynamic contrast ratio, not their actual contrast ratio. The dynamic ratio is under optimal settings and is something that no TV ever actually achieves in real use. The actual contrast ratio of that set is probably around 5000:1, which is still awesome for an LCD. Sharp still has only reached 3000:1 as well as Sony. Don't ever look at the dynamic ratios. There is usually a reason that they don't list the real/native contrast ratio, because it is nowhere near the dynamic ratio.

Sokrman14 is totally right, "dynamic contrast ratio" numbers are quite irrelevant in real-life use, its one of those cool marketing numbers like MHz, GHz and P.M.P.O.

The official Samsung website is listing these LCD displays as having a 500,000:1 Dynamic contrast ratio. Wow!!
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype =lcdtv&model_cd=LNT5781FX/XAA&fullspec=F

I wish every manufactory used static contrast ratio measurements which are more important compared to dynamic contrast ratio. The average CRT has a 50,000:1 contrast ratio and the new Sony SXRD ceiling mounted front projectors have a dynamic contrast ratio of 35,000:1 which is amazing. Normally when dynamic contrast ratio’s are higher then also static contrast ratio’s are higher.
Could these Samsung contrast ratios be a misprint with an extra 0 added by mistake? I could understand 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratios and I would be shocked at a 50,000:1 contrast ratio. When I hear of 100,000:1 and 500,000:1 contrast ratio’s then these displays should have a better picture quality then CRT’s which have been quoted to have on average of 50,000:1 contrast ratio. We need a professional review to see how good these Samsung display’s really are. What is the real static and dynamic contrast ratio’s?
I really doubt that Samsung is the only manufactory that has made a break thru in technology. Where are the other companies listing 500,000:1 and 100,000:1 contrast ratio’s? If these numbers were correct then the Samsung LCD displays would be the best quality display to arrive on the market. The picture quality in theory should far surpass every other technology currently on the market. In reality I am afraid these contrast numbers are a misprint or inflated. How in the world are they able to increase the dynamic contrast ratio so high unless they are using a different standard to measure contrast ratios.

The Samsung's use LED backlights to achieve said ratios.

Don't get too caught up in contrast ratio numbers. It is measured many different ways using many different specs to achieve their desired results. The best way to judge contrast is to look at it yourself and make up your own mind.

Isn't this the brand-new dynamic backlighting system, where the TV first reads the image and intelligently adjusts the brightness of individual LEDs? IIRC it is the 81 series that is supposed to do this (??).

Yeah, the M and F81 series.

It looks pretty awesome tbh. I saw them at IFA, but I am not sure that they have fixed the overscan issues that plague Samsung LCDs.

Anyway, LCD and Plamsa both suck once you have seen the Sony VPL-VW200-Diamond front projector, WOW!

Nice specs.
supposedly some of this new higher contrast ratios are achieved because the LED's in some of the units have the ability to be completly shut off when black is needed. Something that couldn't be done before. Not sure if it merits that high of a contrast ratios but if you can completly turn off the light source for that pixel then you would get a true black or much better than what is being done currently.

OLEd - organic LED,,,so basically same concenpt as the light source can be turned on and off instantly. So when black is needed the source for the pixel is turned off and you get instant pure black.
