Fox, the distributor for the SW films is a Blu-ray only supporter. That said, I wouldn't expect the Star Wars movies to be released any time soon. Lucas waited a long time to release them on DVD. I have read that Lucas hinted towards a 2007 release but I have serious doubts that will happen.

I'd suspect that George Lucas and Rick McCallum have more modifications planned for the original Star Wars trilogy before they release them on Blu-ray, including more digital replacement of characters... Heck, at some point they'll probably replace Sir Alec Guinness with a digitally aged and enhanced Ewan McGregor, because, as Rick McCallum has said before, the modification better represents George Lucas's "original vision".
Unfortunately Mr. Lucas has stated several times that he will NEVER release the original trilogy as they were originally released in the theaters (1977, 1980, 1983), because they don't represent his original vision. He's added that they are available on VHS if you really want them. Great if you like to see the latest technology in filmmaking, and alteration. Horrible if you'd like to see the movies that made George Lucas rich, and made it possible to acquire the technogy he's using to modify the movies. I'd certainly pay high dollar for a Blu-ray disc of Star Wars as originally released in theaters in 1977, well restored, but unaltered including the soundtrack. Blu-ray would easily be able to handle the various soundtrack versions on the original release. |

Ok. I take it all back......
Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD I hope they see fit to do a Blu-Ray edition too. Unfortunately it looks like it's going to be Dolby 2.0 surround only. And of course, it's going to include yet another copy of the new version..... Still great news though. |

My understanding, from many years back, was that Star Wars was NOT supposed to be released on DVD at all until all 6 movies had been finished.
This, of course, turned out to be absolutely stupid on Lucas' part because by the time all the movies were released he has lost years of sales. Also, with HD formats looming, some people may not have bought on DVD who otherwise may have. I don't expect to buy Star Wars again anytime soon. |
