I didn't know Juice had a laserdisc release. And I know Culturedog showed that same release of Platoon on his channel (I think he paid $10-15 for his copy).

Having over 15,000 movies, but only watching about 200 = Fail

Not sure why the guy is a hero, he simply has a lot more money to spend than I do.

Not at all, I think there's something nonchalantly cool about it. He's saying "I'm wasting obscene amounts of money, but I don't care"

Have you seen the home theatres that he's designed? While they're for the rich, they're amazingly beautiful, frequently heavily influenced by either the thematic theatres of the 1920s or the art-deco theatres like Radio City Music Hall.

There are several coffee-table books of his work, although I think they're out of print.

I went to a party at a house that had one of his theaters. The owner didn't actually know how to use it - he had to call his son in to get it going, which told me he didn't use it much because his son didn't live there. But the theater itself was amazingly beautiful, although this was before the advent of Blu-ray and high quality home projectors and the resulting image quality wasn't actually all that great. It was featured in one of the books.

To me, he's a hero because I get the implication from this video that he actually paid for his collection. Being a VIP of sorts in the industry, you would think he would have a sense of entitlement to obtain free copies.

But having said all that, you would think that a designer of multi-million dollar home theaters would design his own space so that it would be easier to get access to all of the titles without using a ladder - maybe motorized shelves or something.

Ordinarily, I do criticize people who have stupendously large collections of movies (or anything) that they can't possibly ever all watch, but in his case, I get a vibe that it works. And for a supposedly rich guy like himself, $15K a year really isn't all that much and it's good for the industry. One thing in regard to Scorsese's collection: I believe Scorsese also owns many 35mm prints, although I don't know where he actually keeps them.

Quality over quantity, always IMO.

I like real old Art Deco cinemas, but I'm not into these type of chintzy pastiche picture palaces he designs. It would not be my style.

I don't have a problem with what he does with his money or his collection. It's just not what I would do or what I would aspire to.
