I just noticed there's a page up for The Man with the Golden Arm, starring Frank Sinatra, being released by Network on June 22nd. This is a great film, and I hope it's true.
Update: Confirmed for June 22nd! Credit also to rapta, who I noticed mentioned it in the Network thread a few days back Last edited by MifuneFan; 04-17-2015 at 03:25 PM. |

Is that considered the correct aspect ratio? A quick search on Google suggested that the OAR was 1.85:1... |

Well it is Frank Sinatra's centenary year, we should be getting a fair few of his films released.

Correct. In the mid-1950s, the US settled for 1.85 as the norm for non-widescreen presentation: but in the UK - and indeed throughout Europe - 1.66 was the standard aspect ratio for spherical as opposed to anamorphic films. The OAR which Network mentions is "as-exhibited" all right, but only for us in Europe. Trouble is, it's an American film, presumably made with 1.85 presentation in mind (though quite possibly shot in open matte 1.33). This is exactly the same AR malarkey that underpins Criterion's pick-and-mix versions of "On the Waterfront"

The film may not have one true AR. Torsten Kaiser, who did the HD master, had this to say about the framing (caps follow):
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...8#entry3953125 Network are presumably using this same master, which is 1.37:1, but I suppose they might be doing their own crop. As for 1.66:1, I'd just like to add that whilst the ratio was popular in Europe, it never caught on in the UK (or Italy for that matter) after it was first used during the first years of widescreen. By 1956/7, 1.75:1 became the dominant ratio, until 1967 onward, were 1.85:1 became dominant (which even as far back as 1957 was more frequently used than 1.66:1 was). Further information, including documented proof of the above, can be found here: http://www.3dfilmarchive.com/home/wi...-documentation (UK section) http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...0#entry4111107 http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...3#entry4111458 http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...3#entry4129557 http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...6#entry4137329 |

it sounds similar to the times of movies being different but the same length (which I don't understand yet but sometime someone or if I have the time I'll look it up) like the Last Emperor has different times outside the USA but same length the fact I can get this for around $7 right now out of the UK to the USA total speaks volumes about how expensive things are in the USA right now ![]() $2.99 fyi plus shipping (Out of Stock price, probably so they can create a bigger order and save money) Last edited by PatrynXX; 08-27-2018 at 03:14 PM. Reason: price at the moment, I suspect longer since it's an out of stock price. |
