Default PS3 (80/60 GB), PS2, Christmas pricing!!

Article:
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thum...s-future-plans

Our mole has a great track record: both the Xbox 360 HDMI story and the wired Xbox 360 Rock Band controllers have since been confirmed. Whoever our friendly inside source is, he's got some great contacts. Now he's ready to tell us what Sony's console pricing plans may soon look like. Here's how Sony's platform pricing will shape up by the holiday shopping season:

* 80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
* 40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
* Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
* PlayStation 2: $99.99

The 80GB price drop isn't that shocking, but a new $400 40GB system would be huge news. Would people be willing to part with 40GB to save $100? I think so, and having a $400 PlayStation 3 option would be a great weapon this holiday season. If they get to show off the Blu-ray capabilities of the system with Spider-Man 3 bundled? That's a nice package.

The $99.99 PlayStation 2 would ensure that the venerable system will continue to sell well. This is rumor for now, but when Sony makes some announcements at the Tokyo Game Show, I would not be shocked if these were among them. You heard it here first.

Ciao,
Pro-B

crossing fingers it will happen
don't believe one second something good will happen in Europe since Mr David REEVES seems to like personal power more than help Sony get better market share

Don't think this (the 40GB part) will happen. Sony's experience with two simultaneous PS3 models has not been good which is why they now discontinue manufacturing the "old" model when the start manufacturing a "new" model. So put this down to unfounded rumor.

so does this mean they are coming out with a 40GB Playstation 3? Because there was never a 40GB before so why now?

The 40GB PS3 has been rumoured for sometime.
Hopefully it has wifi.

$399 - that will move some consoles for sure.

My money is still on the Wii for this Christmas, but if there's a $399 PS3 then total PS3 sales should come out ahead of the 360.

Next Christmas the PS3 will beat both of them.

It would be a marketing thing not a 40GB sales thing.

Yes but when they can see that it is 100$ cheaper, it will sell.

Especially for anyone who is technically savvy and knows how cheap a 2.5" HDD can be had for, or an external 120GB USB HDD instantly turning your 40GB into a 160GB PS3 for only $478
$399 - PS3
$79 - 120GB Seagate External 2.5" USB 5400 rpm drive

In all honesty I believe people don't realize that even 40GB is quite large for a game system(yes, blu-ray player too lol). The original Xbox was 4GB and I never filled that even with 60 whole CD's and about 50 game saves. And the XBOX360 is 20GB and thats plenty for most people. I think they should push this 40GB PS3 model harder this Christmas since it has lower pricing and they'd sell a ton. Parents would be more willing to spend $400 on something that they're children will enjoy for more than a year **cough**Dreamcast**cough** haha(gosh that pissed me off)But thats just my $0.02

A 40GB Playstation must have wifi to be a major benefit to Blu-ray. This would be really attractive system. My guess it will not as Sony seems to come close but just miss on real killer deals.

but the playstation 3 is different from all of the other systems because you can put pictures, videos, music, stuff from the PSN, old playstation 1 and 2 memory in it etc., plus since the games are in HD it takes up a lot more space so really 40 GB thats not really that much when you think about it this is why the 20 GB wasnt as popular as the 60 GB or at least 1 reason. Plus when you buy them they are already lowered amount of hard drive space to add like the latest system update and other stuff.

if the ps3 is upgradeable to 1.1 then this might make sense as to why all the 1.1 players are coming q1 08 rather than this year, sony will dump loads of cheap ps3 systems on us and the CE's wont sell anything over the hols, but if they hold off they may get more sales in q1

The $399 is a hot price for PS3 and for BD players. BDA needs to hit that price point for the holidays. $299-349 would be awesome for stand alone players.

A sale the 2 weeks before Christmas of PS3 at $399.00 will move many units.

BDA needs to start thinking of pricing strategy. The sooner the better.

$399 PS3 is going to cause units to fly off of the shelves. Many people wont care about the lack of 40GB. I upgraded my PS3 from 20GB to 100GB with no problem and it was cheaper than buying the 60GB.

This will be huge for BD this holidays, especially if SM3 is packed in, giving everyone who picks one up a chance to see a great movie at its finest.

I dont see sony having a 40gig model considering they got rid of the 20gig and now the 60gig. It would definitely be nice to have a $400 ps3, but I dont see it happening.

Also I sure hope they continue to include a game (not necessarily motorstorm) with the 80gig at $500.

the reason why the 40Gig PS3 comes up again is because of the price and the missing wifi connection in its first session

many people passed on it because of it....

There was never a 40 gig ps3. There was a 20 gig. People passed because it was hardly available!

As soon as this happens MS will lower the price of the premium to $299 from $349.

Sony wont make an announcement about price, until a week or so (sometimes less) until the price drop. Its only logical to do that.

I think this will happen Nov 17th on the 1 year bday of the system.

I still regret not buying the 20GB when I had the chance (a few days after launch and a few days before my 60Gb came in.)

I think it's great news!
