Default Umphrey's McGee Blu-ray

I just finished reading Michael Reuben's review, and although I'm not really familiar with the band, it sounds like something I would like. The A/V quality is apparently pretty decent. I picture them sounding like a combination of The Grateful Dead/Phish/Santana. I already blind-ordered this, but I would welcome impressions of what to expect.

I saw the Soundstage show on PBS and thought it was just okay. I like a lot of the 'jam bands,' but this one didn't do much for me.

It was my first and only time hearing them, so I'm probably not the best person to judge them.

Thanks for your honest appraisal, Guitar Joe. I don't really care for elevator metal, but I still have high hopes. They seem to have a wide range of instrumentation.

Umphrey's is more in line with the Disco Biscuits, Tea Leaf Green, and moe.

I think they're great.... if you listen to their channel on Pandora etc. for an hour, you can probably get a good impression of them. I didn't see them on Soundstage, so I can't comment.

I had no idea this was coming out..... ORDERED!

Yeah, I would compare them to moe. as well. More rock driven than the Dead or Phish. They're not bad. Their jams seem a bit premeditated though, not as freeform as I'd like. Check youtube for some videos, see if they are to your liking before buying this. I'm going to skip it and keep waiting for Phish to put out a nice bluray show, got my fingers crossed for the Bethel run from last summer

Haha, Kris Myers went to my high school... Vaguely knew him, I knew people that were friends with him though. Good for him. I really dislike this kind of music, though.

Umphrey's is kind of unique, very talented musicians (Jake Cinninger is one helluva guitarist). They pretty much cover all genres of music, be it rock, fusion, metal, reggae, pop, etc. Let's put it this way, most fans I know go bunkers over them, while others just shrug. I loved them the first time I heard them (PBS Soundstage) and have quite a few of their albums now.

They really don't take themselves seriously (even if their music is) and like to fool around. If you like jam bands in general I say go for it, at that price, it's worth it.

Visit their site, they're very generous with their fans.

Like I said, not for everyone, but who knows, you might be one of those who go bunkers

I've already ordered it. From what I've read, they are a jam band, but more technical and heavier than most, and I love technical and heavy music, so I should love it.

Technical, I guess, heavy, sometimes. I've seen them do pure metal, and then some pop dance stuff almost. As I said earlier, you can't really define them by style, they have their own.
