Dollhouse is excellent in it's own right too.

All of those shows except two are one season anyway.

I would start out with Sons of Anarachy as it's easily the best out of the one's you listed.

Are you definitely going to watch all of them? Dollhouse is the only bad one on the list, so maybe start with that one if you're not gonna skip it.

You may also want to stick Firefly between one of the other three remaining shows since they're all dark and gritty.

No it's not. It's not the best, but it has some great redeeming values.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!
We went with Sons of Anarchy, just finished episode 2.
We're hooked.

Oh and yes eventually we will watch all the series, but now we will probably go thru all the SOA first up to current.

Thanks again!

You will not regret it, I have personally recommended SOA to probably over 40 people and have yet to have a single person tell me I made a bad recommendation. So the numbers speak for themselves, SOA is a fantastic show. But you absolutely should also check out Breaking Bad if you have not seen it, as well as one of your choices, Deadwood. Fantastic shoes.

I have nothing against Firefly, but I have trouble recommending shows that only lasted one season and didn't have many episodes due to early cancellation. You are only recommending a show that while entertaining is always going to leave the viewer bummed since it didn't last long enough to really have all those endless great stories or a real ending. It just ends...

I would suggest this order:

Start with Dollhouse.
Cleanse your palate with Firefly.
Learn how real men (and ladies) cuss in Deadwood.
Support the troops with Generation Kill.
Take a ride with Hellboy and Peg Bundy in Sons of Anarchy.

Same can be said for Deadwood.

It may be 3 seasons of complete awesomeness instead of 1, but at the season 3 finale ... it just ends! You will curse at the TV after watching it, knowing that there will never be a continuation.

To the OP, I'm not saying don't watch it - absolutely watch it - but by series end, you'll be as flabbergasted as everyone else trying to understand why there was never a 4th season, given the way season 3 built up then ended.

Regarding the other options:

SOA is a must, but since you've started season 1, do yourself this favour - be sure to have immediate access to seasons 2 & 3. It is that good.

Firefly - never watched it. Can't comment.

Dollhouse - watched a few episodes. Seemed like a poor-mans ALIAS, and even that was a chore to sit through at times. Whilst Elisha Duckshoe is great to look at, she's difficult to watch. The rest of the cast, story & production didn't help much either. If you like the current Nikita series, you might enjoy it ... maybe.

Generation Kill - F*cken awesome. No other way to describe it.

If I had to pick an order to watch them, get Dollhouse & Firefly out of the way first.
Then watch Deadwood 1, 2 & 3
...then Generation Kill
...then you'll want to watch Deadwood again (trust me, you will. There's so much to take in, you may even want to watch it again straight away instead of starting on GK)
...then watch SOA season 1, 2 & 3.
