Default Why does everyone hate "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?"

When the film came out, most audiences and critics loved it. It was nominated for a bunch of Academy Awards and even won a few.

Lately, I'm reading numerous people on forums or IMDB, a few critics including Peter Travers in his vid. review for The Social Network (who gave the film a positive review (3 stars) are all saying the film is bad or after The Social Network, they forgive him for the film.

What the eff?

I personally love the film.

The only argument I hear for people disliking it is that it's to long and dragged out or it's like Forest Gump, but slower and no heart (which I totally disagree).

I don't find the movie boring.....

A main reason, from what I've seen, is it's too long and drawn out.

I personally think the movie is a masterpiece, and one of the best from elite director David Fincher.

To make more sense than that, it was a beautifully filmed movie with powerful performances and excellent direction/production but it's just so boring.

I could not stand it, it was boring and had no real plot. I am glad others enjoyed it, but I didn't

I thought it was ok. It didn't feel particularly fresh for me, but it was entertaining for a one time, or at best a once in a great while, viewing.

My review....

2 out of 5 stars

This movie is about a baby who is born old and as he grows 'older' he paradoxically grows younger. That boy's name is Forrest, Forrest Gump. Huh? Oh, I'm sorry I got confused. While watching this epically long film I kept thinking of Gump. Considering both stories were written by the same person I guess it's not really surprising. Still, maybe try going in a different direction or something instead of pandering to our intelligence that this is nothing but a blatant attempt at being the 'it' movie come Oscar time. Thankfully much better fare won their nominations instead - with the exception of Best Makeup, which admittedly was well deserved. To director Fincher's credit he doesn't resort to typical gimmicks to tell us how we're supposed to feel during any given scene, no swelling music to be found here. But you'd think that with such a long run time he'd have spent more time on exploring the dilemma of loving someone who grows younger as you grow older instead of wasting time on unnecessary scenes which did nothing but attempt to ram it into the audience's head as to how amazingly, hugely, important this movie is supposed to be. Sorry, but it isn't.

Maybe it's just me and a few others, but I don't find this movie boring at all. There was a time when I first bought it that I watched it, like, three times in a row. I dunno. I do agree that it's a long film and maybe could've been a wee bit shorter.

I have to agree with the people who say that it's too similar to Forrest Gump. It was even written by the same guy!

Reason I don't like it:
1) Too similar to Forrest Gump.
2) Should have been 30 minutes shorter. The scenes that happened during Hurricane Katrina were completely unnecessary (much like the scenes with old Rose in Titanic).
3) Brad Pitt's Southern accent was unconvincing.
4) I feel that it was completely undeserving of most of its Academy Award nominations.

2.5/5

I liked it. Though it could have ended sooner and seemed to drag in spots. Due to it ending sadly, that might be a reason people dislike it.

Personally I did not like it. I watched an hour of it and turned it off. I try to give every movie at least a half an hour, but gave this one a bit more I guess because it was longer. I love the idea of the story but could not get into it. I have nothing against people who love it. Hey everyone has different likes and dislikes. For instance I love Avatar and several people on this site hate it.

It's a good movie but I can only see it once. Maybe I will see it again in a few years.

I enjoyed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button immensely. Yes, the movie is a bit lengthy, but the performances are masterful. I even bought the soundtrack on CD. Alexandré Desplat's score is simply beautiful.

As usual, Internet humor took prevailing opinion, tied it to some editing, and said it best:

...I'm sorry, I can't top that one. I can't.

(Btw, have you read the original Fitzgerald story? It's two pages long.
I suspect a tad of pretentious screenwriter/director padding.)

Wow wasn't expecting one of the resident film lovers like you that usually likes stuff like this to hate it. Seriously to those who said we hate it because the ending is sad, the movie would've been a lot better if we actually cared that it ended.
