United Kingdom A Touch Of Zen (King Hu) MOC Release

timae mentioned this in the "Dragon Inn" thread, but it deserves one of its own.

The Masters of Cinema blu-ray is now up for order on Amazon.uk

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Masters-Cine...a+touch+of+zen

Release date: January 25th.

4K restoration.

LIMITED EDITION (THREE DISC SET) - 2000 copies.

I'm assuming this will be region B, like "Dragon Inn".

Any members receive this copy from Amazon UK, I've ordered in November but there is still not activation for despatch. I've check and they say that it is "currently unavailable" without showing when the actual release will be.

Mine is still showing that it will dispatch on the 25th of Jan and I should expect it between Jan 30th - Feb 5th. So, maybe there were enough people pre-ordering that they sold out for now? Unless there has been a delay or recall or something then I would expect if you did pre-order it, it should ship out on time. Normally, Amazon shoots me an email if there is a problem and I have not received an email from them saying there is.

Mine is saying "Not yet dispatched". Mine is saying expected delivery date is between Feb 5 - 9th now instead of what it said yesterday. Maybe that will get adjusted. I hope it doesn't get delayed too much.

I will check back on it tomorrow and see what happens.

UPDATE: Preparing for dispatch

Mine shipped.

The set isn't available anymore, either, so I presume it sold out.

UPDATE: Available again, though it says "Usually dispatched within 9 to 11 days."

Mine is now saying - Shipping Today. Which would probably be Tuesday already, but there is no tracking info yet.

I watched it last night... absolutely amazing picture quality! If you've only seen one of the older DVDs, you haven't really seen the film. The restoration is just as good as "Dragon Inn," and both of them are must-have blu-rays to have in your collection.

I found it interesting that "Touch of Zen" came with a slipcase, but "Dragon Inn" did not (I pre-ordered both of them, so it wasn't a question of missing the boat). Did everyone else find this to be the case? Seems strange they would put out one that way but not the other.

A Touch of Zen was a collector's edition hence the slipcase and bonus DVD.

I posted this in the UK ATOZ thread but thought it was worth repeating here:

The version of ATOZ on the Eureka! blu-ray is the "edited together" version of the film instead of it being shown as Part 1 & Part 2 seperately.

The edited version loses a (roughly) 1 second shot of
[Show spoiler]Captain Ouyang Nin riding his horse back to the Office of the Magistrate
.

Also, any minor print damage that is in the movie is on both the old Tai Seng dvd release and on the Eureka! blu-ray print in the same location. It is easy to see where/how Eureka! has improved the print but there are some minor black circles/print "holes" that appear from time-to-time.

I figured it would be as that's how King Hu intended it to play.

I remembered that you had a question about it previously and I know that some people that are familiar with the movie might question it. Too bad they couldn't have included both versions on the blu-ray. I guess I will be keeping my Tai Seng dvd after all. Every time I think that I am upgrading and will be able to sell off an old disc, something is different enough to make me want to hang on to the old release.

I'm not sure how much can be done with seamless branching but I think this would require them to put both versions at full length. There's no way for either presentation to look good on a disc that crammed.

On the other hand, would you really be able to offload that DVD even if you wanted to?

It really amounts to almost nothing and probably would not be worth a bother to include it. But, if they wanted to do it for being complete, then perhaps just add the missing shot and altered credits as an extra.

There are a few local stores in my area where I could have sold the DVD for $1 or $2. Not much, I know, but it would have been one less DVD to have to store or keep track of.

Strange that it's back in stock at a few places. Guess stock must have been redistributed or something.
