Guess this is not a followup to Josh Hartnett in "30 Days Of Night"....

I dunno if it's just me, but none of the icons and graphics will load up in that review.

Same with the top of the page.

Actually no, it's the whole site. Avatars work, but nothing else shows up. No star ratings, no box art, nothing.

Weird that it's a VC-1 encode; I own the Canadian BD and can confirm the Alliance disc has an AVC encode.

The transfer isn't that great on the Canadian disc either, so I'm assuming it's an issue with the source material or needs a remaster.

Default Still the HD-DVD excuse.

From the review of this movie, "But 40 Days and 40 Nights, presented via a VC-1 codec, in 1080p and 1.78:1, is certainly one of the shoddier looking efforts from Lionsgate, or anyone else for that matter, in some time. I searched (without much success) to see if perhaps this film had been released on HD-DVD, thus accounting for the VC-1 encode and the less than spectacular looking results."

I am a little disappointed after 3 years that this site is still using HD-DVD as a scapegoat, its funny because it is never brought up if the encode and quality of picture is fine like with a movie that was previously only available on HD-DVD like Casino but if the quality isn't great like with Tremors this question always comes up. I own plenty of HD-DVD's and Blu-rays and there are as many shoddy looking Blu-rays from the first two years as there were HD-DVDs. I am honestly surprised it still comes up after three years instead of blaming a company for being lazy and using an old master rather than wondering maybe it was on HD-DVD before?

I was in fact making that very point--that this might have been an old transfer. Perhaps I didn't state that artfully enough. I wasn't "blaming" HD-DVD for anything. I actually owned an HD-DVD player and had lots of discs on that format.

Such a cruel movie, I love it. I wonder what happened to Josh Hartnett. I think Sin City was the last time I saw him

He's been in some good films since then, but he certainly isn't in the amount of roles he used to be featured in. I enjoyed him quite a bit in Lucky Number Slevin, The Black Dahlia, 30 Days of Night, and most recently I Come with the Rain, all which came out after Sin City.

Sorry if I came off as a ick, I am still a little bitter over the HD-DVD demise.

I am thinking this is something to do with Miramax's end. I wondering if part of the agreement with Lionsgate and Echo Bridge if Lionsgate was able to look at the quality of some of these masters and was like; "Um...no!" Because this looks like something someone would be bashing as an Echo Bridge release.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe, it's not EchoBridge makingthe blu-rays not look as good, maybe it's Miramax, maybe Lionsgate bought the most popular and ones with the best picture. Honestly, I don't think 40 Days and 40 Nights looks all that bad, I just skimmed through it and it looks good not 5/5, but not bad.

Has anyone tested the region coding on the disc to see if it works on region b players? Thanks

According to High Def Digest.com, it's Region Locked for Region A:

I found this unopened at Amoeba Music for six bucks tonight and picked it up for nostalgic purposes (Josh Hartnett being one of my first crushes as a lovesick teen).

Maybe it's just me getting older, but this movie has not aged well where the female characters are concerned. Vinessa Shaw was always an unlikable harpy and the direction the script takes her character in her final scene with her raping Hartnett is still completely repulsive sixteen years later, but I never realized how grating Shannyn Sossamon is once it gets out about how Hartnett's friends have the bet website set up.

Anyone know if the uk disc from universal has a better transfer? I know it's AVC instead of VC-1, but are the elements used in any better condition?

Gonna bump my post from a while ago, now that Paramount is reissuing the (same) disc. Anybody have an answer? Would like to replace my dvd copy.
