I have a question though, if I were to replace the HDD, how would I get the Sony PS3 OS back on the new drive?

The OS is stored on flash memory, not the HDD.

Sweet, thanks. I have the first release 60GB and would be cool to increase to 250GB...I don't know how I would use it all. Well if the HD-DVR thing comes out then I know I'll need more space.

Does upgrading the HDD present any heat/noise issues, in anyone's experience?

I have an 80gb PS3 that's nowhere near capacity yet, but just for future reference.

Thanks.

I've been looking to update to a bigger drive. What should I do with the 60 GB drive I take out?

keep it. I just have it as a backup in case anything ever goes wrong. You can try to sell it on ebay but that is so small that I doubt you'll get much for it. You can always stick it in an encolosure and use it as an external hard drive

if you can wait for a year or so you should. next year they will have a 256 gb solid state drive (ssd). no moving parts means no heat, noise and more energy efficient. it is suppose to come out htis year but i am sure it will cost a pretty penny (macbook air has a 64gb ssd for $950 more than a spinning drive). just a thought on the situation.

ps they have a 128 gb right now for around $1000.

Electricity causes heat, not the moving parts.

Actually both cause heat.

Moving parts creates alot of heat though. Especially when you're to the 65 nm fabrication .

It's the resistance in electricity that causes the heat.

Moving parts is alot more heat [and power consumption].

Consider, how hot is an LED light bulb versus a traditional incandescent.

Thank you, Mr. Wizard. My point was that SSD hard drives will still heat up, irrespective of their lack of moving parts. So canonbomb's claim that an SSD hard drive has "no heat" because it has "no moving parts" wasn't accurate.

Keep it! You'll need it if you ever have to claim warranty from Sony

Someone recomended to buy one of teh WD portable drives. You open it up and swap it with the PS3 drive and you will have an upgraded PS3 drive and a portable HD. Good luck.

This is the drives im talking about, but i guess any 2.5 portable drive will do.

i ment there is no heat from moving parts. ofcouse there is going to be heat from elec resistance. but i guess i could have been clearer in my anaswer.

a ssd drive will create less heat than a regualr hdd.
